Cyclic Dextrin - is the cost justified?

Been using BBW dextrin (got it on offer) and getting low.  I like having fast carbs PWO but is the cost justified when its over 5x the price of dextrose?

Any other decent options that won't break the bank?

I've found it's worth it for me (if I'd paid for it) as I don't inflate like a balloon like I do with other simple carbs. I'll have a serving before the gym or football with a coffee and I'm hot to trot. Do the same with a hand full of sweets for example and I get bloated, sluggish and gassy. No thanks.

I'm playing football 3 tines a week now and I'm about a quarter of the way through a 5kg bag

I'm quite interested in this. Does anyone have any links to articles or studies?

There is a podcast in which John Meadows advocates the use of Cyclic dextrin.

The geard up podcast http://geardup.com/.

Youd have to search for it

Here is a really good Vid with John Meadows preparing his food and supplements in which he prepares his Intra drink with Cyclic Dextrin. He speaks about Dextrin, Vitargo and other carb sources later in the vid.

I think for many as Faip says it doesnt cause stomach issues, no bloating and good for people with sugar issues.

I use it in my intra and I find it helps me push really hard through my whole gym session, sometimes without it the last 15mins of any given session I would start to feel weak. It also helps speed up recovery. I really rate it as a supplement.

Yeah I do think it's a useful supp - it's just so expensive! Hopefully as it becomes more commonly used the price will come down a bit.

Dead calories IMO. Give me a jam & banana buttie on wholegrain bread any day of the week.

BUT, I'd rather Cyclic Dextrin over Dextrose/Malto.

I might give it a try to see if makes me feel any 'different' during or after training, at the moment i train fasted and have about 20g of BCAA's intra mixed in a low sugar/calorie squash.

As WW has already said there are better, cheaper options. Fruit, sweets, jam on bread, hell even a can of coke would do.

Just another waste of money supplement that has been cleverly marketed. Save your hard earned IMO.

It works a lot faster than sugar - loads of reports out there to confirm that.

As always with these things... "is the cost justified" depends on what you like to spend your money on and how much disposable income you have. It's about £30 to go to the cinema now with the gf and get snacks, it's about £50 to go out for dinner at a reasonably priced restaurant, and trainers will set you back £80.

So is Cyclic Dextrin worth £1 a workout?
- it's a brilliant ingredient
- it's proven to work well
- elite athletes love it
- it's a better use of money than £80 trainers, £80 jeans (what a pair of levis will set you back now - not "posh" by any stretch), and a whole host of other things people choose to spend their money on.

To put it in another context, a bottle of Coke will be £1.25 if you pick one up at a gym - or buy one at the newsagent. Cyclic dextrin is far more advanced and will aid your recovery much more substantially, and is cheaper. If you've not the budget for it then Dextrose is good too although not quite as fast & effective imo.

You could put this question to any context - "Is a Ferrari 458 worth it or should I buy a Focus ST?"... depends on personal budget, how much you're willing to spend on sups, and where your interests are really. All down to individual choice.
