DaveH's Pictures/Journal

Right,

Finally got the courage to do some pictures of myself and post them up.

I will turn this into a journal once I've got next week out the way as work is a nightmare next week.

I took these pics quickly mainly to get some valued opinions from you all.

My stats are in my sign off, I have not measured my body parts except that I know my arms are about 15".

I've been training for about 4 years but the first year and a half were a waste of time as I had no idea what I was doing.

I have no before pics sadly but if you can imagine I was about 9 stone. Now I'm about 13 stone. Actually I do have a video of me before I started training I may try and get a still of it...

Anyway let me know what you think...

Thanks.

    Comming on great bro!

Just keep eating and training hard and you'l do fine.

Looks like you you are fairly lean as you can still see your 6 pack.

    keep it up

    Thanks.

Yeah my bulking up was done gradually, rather slowly but this way I ensured I was putting on quality mass. I will try and continue to do this.

When I outline my journal soon I will post my routines and my short term goals. One thing people will notice is that my poundages are quite low for someone who has been training my length of time. This is something I am trying to correct with 5x5...

Dave that's a lot of mass you've added their mate. You should be proud. Good luck with the training ( you'll love 5x5! ).

    Cheers Boxer.

I'm doing legs tonight and then tomorrow morning I have to go to France for work will be back Wednesday night so training will resume Thursday and then I'll post up my progress and journal then.

My poundages will seem really low as my training has always been mixing it up every 3 months for the last few years. My strength will improve...

    okay,

Finally got back from Paris last night so I thought I would pass up Monday's results.

I did legs. I am coming off of TonyStarks' long term cycle. I have two weeks left then I am moving onto a complete 5x5 routine. I may also have a week off before this though as I have a few repeating nagging aches.

    Anyway here's what I did.

Squats 5x5 at 80kg. (will move up next session slight nagging pain in me left groin when doing squats these day though).
SLD's 5x5 at 42.5kg. (Struggled on the last set but made it, back's a bit dodge as I pulled something from last friday on my first rep of my deadlifts. My first rep always seems sloppy).
Lunges 2 X 8 at 16kg. I think lunges are incredibly boring I will keep them for the next 2 weeks but they will not be in my next program.
Calf Machine Presses 2 X 12 at 200kg - No calf machine so I use this it works. I find I have to do some calf work as I feel for me they do not get hit enough on squats.

My diet throughout the day was.

    8:00 cereal and protein powder.
    10:30 - roast chicken sandwich
    12:30 - roast chicken sandwich.
    2:30 - Chicken baguette.
    4:30 - 2 pints of skimmed milk.
    6:00 - 1 banana for training ahead.
7:15 - post workout protein powder.
8:00 - baked potato and haddock.
    10:00 - protein powder.

Tuesday/Wednesday - work trip took protein bars with me.

Tonight will do shoulder's/tri's and chest.

My poundages are fairly low as I was what was known as a 'pumper' throughtout my training I am doing. 5x5 will improve my strength.

Cheers gymbabe, but don't you think I should get more mass rather than cut?

    Done the following today:

5x5 weighted dips with 14kg between my legs leaning forward.
3x8 incline bench press at 60kg. Got 8, 6 and a dodgy 5. Same as last week no progress here.
2x8 Dumbbell Shoulder press at 26kg. Got 8 then 5. This is not good I always seem to arch my back inwards whilst doing these. If I do them standing it's the same.

If I drop the weight to 24kg I do it with no bending at all but can
    finish the set easily.

Not sure what to do here I have to advance but this can't be doing back much good especially as I have scoliosis.

2X8 Skullcrushers at 22.5kg. Last rep of second set was a struggle but got there in the end.

Diet for the day same as Monday.

Friday - Done back and Bi's.

Should not have done today without having a day rest but the trip to paris mashed me up this week so i had to fit it in somehow.

Deadlifts 5x5 at 117kg. Last rep of the last set almost destroyed me.
Bent Over db rows 3x8 at 24kg.
Triangle pullups 4x6 with 3kg weight hanging.
Barbell Curls 2x8 at 37.5kg. Last 2 reps were cheats.

    Monday - Should be legs.

Had the worst workout of my life today.

Started on Squats at 82kg. First rep felt that pain in my groin that I have been getting for the last few weeks. Winced through the pain for 3 sets and decided that I should just stop.

Went on to SLD's. Got to the 3rd set of that and discovered that a muscle in my upper right back was twinging and decided to stop.

Went home feeling completely peeved off having a abandoned a session for the first time in my life...

I think I should take a week off. I'm overdue one by a couple of weeks anyway I think.

I was going to get through this week and next week and take a week off before starting my routine but I think with these two injuries I should just STOP and do a new routine next week.

I hope the time off will sort out these two probs but my groin has been bad for a while. I will post a separate topic up asking for advice on this...

I'm off work this week so perhaps it is a good time...

Finally came back after my week off on Monday and felt great.

I went into full on 5x5 routine.

Monday - Pull all weights @ Kg counting only weights on the bar...
Deads 5x5 @ 122.5 Thought my back would give out but it was strong as and I managed all sets.
    Barbell BentOver Rows 5x5 @ 42.5 - done.
Barbell Curls 5x5 @ 37.5 last rep of last set almost killed me but got it with no cheat curling....

    Wednesday - Push
Bench Press @ 70 5x5 - last rep did not want to move and I struggled for what seemed like an eternity but got it there in the end.
Incline DB Press @ 26s 5x5 -Bit too easy these...
Seated Shoulder Press @ 18s 5x5 - Bit too easy too.

On the whole pleased so far just hope my groin holds out for legs tomorrow and that nagging in my upper right of my back don't come back. All good because I am moving up weights for each next session.

Dave, im just starting back at the gym after what feels like an eternity away from it (but was actually 5 weeks or so) since i injured my back from Stiff leg deads.
You've been training longer than me so i guess you know your form better, but id be careful of any pains you're getting in your back. I know you wont need me to tell you, but im going to say it, dont round that back mate!

Also, good curling! Before my time off, i was 5x5 deadlift 105kg, 20kg less than yours, but my BB curls were relatively weaker by a much higher margin.

    Do you know your 1rms?

    Thanks.

You are right about the back pains.

I have no idea what my 1rms is... Maybe I'll do singles sometime. My curling has always been a strength, training my bi's is my favourite exercise... Good luck with your training comeback.

My back hurt again today and I think it's because I tried to do standing shoulder presses on Wednesday and I was arching in too much. I won't do them again. Seated from now on...

Interesting point about rounding of the back. I agree with you that you should not round your back. I try my best but think that my scoliosis makes it hard not to round slightly.

Also in Dinosaur Training it is noted somewhere in there that round back lifting is okay for strongmen, but from my experience with my s bend spine it's not great.

    Today I did squats @ 80kg,
    SLD's @ 57.5kg.
I finished on 1 set of weighted crunches for 12 reps.

My pain in my back is on the middle-upper right side of my back. Nagging pain and the muscle is definitely swollen up. I feel like I need an injection to relax the muscle...
