Dead Mac Mini Hard drive - Any reccomendations?

The hard drive in my Mac-Mini has inexplicably given up the ghost some time since turning it off on Saturday and turning it on this moring.

It wouldn't boot so I tried booting in single user mode, just presented me with "IATA Controller conflict" or something similar.
I then attempted to boot from the OSX CD, which worked to a point but wouldn't run Disk Utility.
As a last resort I attempted a clean install of OSX and which hangs at 52% so it would appear we have a major problem.

I'm thinking, new hard drive rather than arsing about with Apple Support as I'm well out of warranty and Apple engineers ride horses and wear masks.

I've built a few PC's in me puff so I'm fairly confident I can do the job once I get into the wee f**ker. Have any techies any thoughts on a replacement?

you need a Xacto knife to get into the mac mini its clipped along the bottom, its a pain to get into. Ive done them loads of times when upgrading the RAM, superdrive etc. Ive even upgraded the CPU on one as it not soldered

no way mate, believe it or not i used a thin metal paint scraper to get into it . Its just clipped along the bottom from what i can remember, the link to the service manuals are above mate if you want to take a peek at it which shows graphically how to do it

I think I know what you mean, I would love to know what it is you are supposed to use to get into them with our the possibility of scratching.

havent scratched one yet, ipods are a piece of cake i just use my nail to pop open the case followed by a plastic credit card, same way with iBook Dual USB's. Havent scratched one in years, but i am a very careful engineer and take twice as long as everyone else

You got it mate, any bog standard PC 2.5" HD with IDE connection will work a treat. www.scan.co.uk is a good place to look for a cheap drive, just format it when you boot up off of the OSX disk. Also be aware the minis have 1 IDE bus that is ahred between the optical drive and the HD, you may need to jumped the hd to slave/master etc to get it to work. If you need any help give me a shout

Mmm nt sure on this videoing, don't want anything else expensive within range when I mess it up.

It wasn't so expensive that it won't feel the heavy end of a sledge after hours of frustration! Its already cruising for a bruising after this mornings performance!
