Dead's Oly Attempt.

I used to have a journal on here many moons ago when I was training with fellow members Jedi and Brock. They were halcyon days indeed but and I then I got lazy and stopped training.

I had only just started to get some training under my belt again recently when I saw that a friend of mine was looking for members for an oly club he was setting up. I'd always fancied giving that a go as I thought it looked cool and what with only just starting to get back to training it seemed like good motivation and a good time to learn something new. Truth is if I tried to train like I used to, then I would be tempted to chase numbers and probably end up either injured, disappointed or both.

So for the past few weeks I've been getting to grips with snatches and having to clean and jerk, fnar fnar and I figured it was time to journal again.

Tuesday 07-10-14

Everything in Kg.

Hang Cleans
50 x 5-5-5

Front Squats-Paused
60 x 5
65 x 5
70 x 5

Push-Press/Jerk
60 x 3/2 (3*press + 2*jerk)
65 x 3/2
67.5 x 3/2

Pendlay Rows
50 x 8
50 x 8
50 x 8

So there you go, not amazingly interesting at the moment and not really impressive poundage being moved but hopefully it'll get better as the weeks go by or maybe it won't.

Slight pull in my tri, so no club session tonight, just a quick session in the garage instead. Avoided putting anything heavy overhead.

Snatch Deadlift

It's not all that bad, just treating it with kid gloves as I want to be fit and healthy for the weightlifting seminar on Sunday.

What's the idea behind the jerk dips mate? Just getting used to a heavier weight etc?

SUN 12-10-14
Weightlifting seminar with GB weightlifter Zoe Smith and her coach Sam Dovey, focusing on the Snatch.
Bit difficult to write this up as a workout as it was quite stop start in terms of technical break down, actually doing the lifts, analysing lifts, feedback on tech etc... However he is the end result.

Snatch
40 x 3
50 x 2
57.5 x 1
60 x 0/0/0

There were plenty of other bits done, it terms of working on the first pull with snatch grip deads, snatch balance for catching the weight and hang snatches for second pull but there’s not a lot of point writing that up.
It terms of lifting I was a bit disappointed with my lifting on the day, as my current PB is 60, so I would have liked to have bettered it, if only slightly but  I didn’t really approach the session with 1rm and smashing PB’s in mind (good job really).  It was more about longevity than instant gratification, so identifying any technical errors in my lifting and yes there are a few. Although to give the guy who runs the club his dues, he had already identified and started to correct most of them. So it’s good to know that he knows his stuff, not that I ever doubted him of course.

The only other disappointing part was that I wasn’t talent spotted for Rio 2016, not that I thought that was really going to happen, well maybe a little bit.

I’ll end by saying that both Zoe and Sam were friendly in person and stayed around for a long time after, talking shop with people and having photos etc. Also Zoe is so goddamn tiny in person it makes the fact that she can put 120kg overhead even more impressive.

Not to take the easy route, but this guy can explain better than me (even if he does do crossfit )

Was she genuinely teeny tiny? Was there anything about her build which would indicate that much power?
