"Diet Whey" - Anyone used them or recommend anything?

Hi all,

I've been back in training for a couple of months now after a year off and whilst trying to rebuild my lost muscles (which is going ok actually), I'm also trying to loose a bit of excess weight at the same time.

I have so far been training 'dry' so to speak, without any kind of shakes or protein added to my diet, but I think I would like to get back on the protein shakes, and maybe use them as a meal replacement once a day or so.
My diet from day to day is pretty low fat and I'm trying to watch the portion size as well.

So, given my goal includes weight loss, I started looking at so called 'diet whey' and I wondered if anyone can recommend anything? And are they actually much different to normal whey?

Thanks!

phd do a diet whey as do reflex

i tried the phd diet whey last year when i was cutting (simply cause it was the same cost as the regular pharma whey anyway roughly when working out amount of protein you get)

got the white chocolate which was the most horrific protein ever, so stay clear of that. im sure the other flavours are good though. personally dont see the point in diet whey myself, none of the extra things added are really going to make any different tbh

Current goals: get back in the game

Generally I think diet whey have added ingredients such as green tea extract, Flaxseed.

Only variations i've seen are MyProtein, Reflex and PHD.
Only one I've tried is PHD as I got a sample a while back.  Strawberry Delight, honestly was probably the best tasting whey i've ever tried, tasted like Brunch ice lolly's, but at £22 a kilo no thanks.

IMO, they're not worth their price, i'd buy the ingredients individually and make your own.

Firstly Id post up your diet, as this will be alot more important to losing weight than just having the use of 'diet' products.

PHD have a 'diet whey' which have added extras such as CLA, L-Carnitine and Green Tea to help with fat loss whilst having a slow-release protein blend aimed to prevent 'hunger pangs'.

I did a look around and I know Reflex's new diet protein has a good serving of CLA as well as green tea and l-carnitine - watch out for insignificant doses, one other product I think had less than half a gram CLA which meant it would take something like 8 servings a day to get a good dose of just one of the ingredients.

As Echo has said, the Reflex Diet protein contains the recommended 3.2g of CLA per 2 servings whereas PhD is underdosed. Green tea and L-carnitine is also added for fat burning.
The Reflex one is actually not that much more expensive than buying all the ingredients seperately but whether you believe in those ingrdients working for fat loss is another thing.

I think thats the top and bottom of it - the ingredients have been shown to have beneficial fat loss effects (green tea, CLA and l-carnitine) but obviously the studies are under controlled conditions which don't reflect real life most of the time, but wouldn't be possible to conduct otherwise.

Personally if I didn't have a load of whey already on the go I'd be trying it out!

As mentioned, you can see that the PhD is underdosed on CLA.

i strongly agree with DHumphreys on this one. i assume you already know that fat loss ultimately comes down to diet and training

as for diet whey, they have things added like CLA and green tea but as far as im aware these products have little evidence to show theyre very beneficial in fat loss and for that reason i wouldnt bother paying the high price from them. stick to a simple whey concentrate/isolate blend and ignore that 'diet' whey products imo

I disagree, speaking from a Diet Protein POV, the ingredients have data to show they aid weight loss.

    to a significant level?

What would be classed as a significant level?

Most would be shown to improve body composition to a statstically significant level within the the parameters of the stufy design.
