Oh man that’s disappointing. I had fish and chips on good Friday but used a just eat coupon for 15%off. Never again will I order battered fish for delivery! It was all stick to the paper, so when I unwrapped it it took the batter with it! Made it healthier though

I bet southwold was rammed with the good weather

It was busy. But not full of the plums you get at hunstanton or Yarmouth so more tolerable. I did expect a bit more of the pier TBH but the bottom line was we all enjoyed it and was 90mins door to door. I did appreciate the lack of parking enforcement too. Got myself a nice spot by the church 30min wait for the whole day

I'm very surprised you made such a cardinal sin!

107.6 this morning no adjustments will be made. Yes I know I was at the coast and have fish and chips etc but that's really no different to my normal weekend family meal the rest of the day was very low cal and lots of walking, Sunday was by the book. Had I held even I'd have been OK but putting on weight is a sign. Won't be much, couple of hundred cals maybe. Back still 'stinging', where cervical becomes thoracic and starting think something more could be up despite mobility generally being OK (apart from today's session).

Smith Squats: 10x20, 7x40, 7x60, 5x80, 4x100, 115x12, 11, 10, 8, 7
Hack Squats: 10x40, 100x12, 10, 8, 8
Hamstring Curls: 8x#7, #10 x13, 10, 9, 8, 8
Smith Calf Raises: 10x60, 115x12, 11, 11, 11, 9, 9
Incline Dumb-bell Curls: 18.5s x14, 12, 10, 10, 8... 17.5x4, 15x5

mobility work still going well despite what my spine is up to, setting up for squats not so much fun. This was the one that did me in so some struggle here is expected, but a week on and if anything this was more awkward than after I did it last week (tho not as acutely painful on a permanent basis). The result was getting my shoulder to go with a regular squat grip, which I eventually just about got and in the end got good sets out. Fell short on the last so a dig deep 5th set was done. Legs feeling battered I then had hacks to do, ended out pumping out the  reps very well here, 4 sets with an extra 5kg and I'd matched reps and seeing as walking was now a chore (and preserving my neck/back) I stopped there. Hams were up in weight and managed quite well and reps were up. Struggled with calves as sore neck was settled in, again, standard squat grip eased and, interestingly, last 2 sets were FS style and reps held even. Finally biceps, I knew going up would be costly so finished the 5 sets with a quick double drop.

Are you sure it’s muscular and not anything else?

If it’s muscle it’s probably rhomboids if it’s around the C7- T1 region. Shouldn’t still be giving jyp a week later tho

I'm not sure now, no, hence why I said I think it could be something more. It had felt slightly eased every day until today irritated it more again. I had suspected if it was the muscles between the vertebrae then maybe just never getting rested was hindering things.

I will be monitoring this week closely, see what my physio mate reckons and if getting nowhere then probe my gp.

Tweaked it (in a giant cracking crunch sort of way) last Monday. I can't imagine it's spinal/disc as with things like benching there is absolutely no discomfort whatsoever, only on things that cause an active contraction/stretch around that area. If I had damaged the disc/bone I would expect pain involving any movement, loaded or not. Just bloody annoying and uncomfortable

106.6 this morning so a bit of a drop on yesterday, maybe back to normality a bit. Fair bit on our feet yesterday too with taking the littl'un round a couple of parks, and a big leg session probably depleting things a bit too. Back still sore but as last week, eased a bit overnight. Mate wasn't on the gym floor today tho so no probing.

Smith Decline Bench: 10x40, 8x60, 5x80, 107.5x11, 10, 8, 7, 7
Pec Dec: #16 x14, 12, 10, 9...14x5...11x6
JM Smith Press: 67.5x11, 10, 10, 9, 9
V Bar Push Down: #16+2.5kg x15, 13, 11, 10, 9
Dumb Bell SLR - 'Pinned': 12.5s x19, 14, 12, 11, 11
Plate Front Raise: 35kg x11, 10, 9, 8

Yet again, despite the back issues mobility work felt good and went well. And back was absolutely fine on bench work. Warm ups OK, heavy sets feeling heavy (as my bench always seems to) but after a slight lacklustre 1st set the remaining sets weren't so bad. Had to do a 5th but that was always on the cards. Pec dec went OK but started to fade, couldn't decided on a true 5th set or a drop set, went for a drop (double drop), the pump was good. JM was odd, 1st set was a shocker but after that it moved quite well (note: a warm up set may have helped) another 5 setter for good measure. Small increase too on PDs and reps were going fairly well, still went for 5 here too. DB SLRs went well with the weight jump, bit less comfy on the back here (with the least weight of anything I'd done all morning) but got thru my sets alright. Finished off with front raises which weren't a problem, 4 sets to get the volume in.

This spine/back injury sounds like a enigma mate would have certainly thought pec dec/front raises would have been a problem but nothing.....weird.

It's an anomaly. Couldn't get it poked today but my mate said he'll give it a whack Friday but did remark at just how seized it was at the time last week so he's not altogether surprised it's still uncomfortable/sore now. However, it's also no guarantee that it couldn't be something more. But again, today, while reaching my left arm out pulls on the right side (imagine left signalling on a bike), almost everything else is nothing more than a bit of discomfort and training back today wasn't a problem at all, on anything.

So weight is dropping again this week but still marginally up on last week. 106.4kg today. Mobility work again was all really good despite upper back tightness so this is all really odd.

Seated Cable Row (EZ): 12x #5, 10x #8, 6x#11, #14+2.5kg x14, 13, 12, 11, 11
Parallel Grip Chins: BW x12, 11, 8, 8, 7
Standing Shrugs: 37.5kg x15, 13, 13, 12, 10
Dumb Bell Spider Curls: 15s+1.25kg x14, 12, 11, 11, 10
Rope Curls: #12 x14, 11, 10, 9, 9
Hack Calf Raises: 10x80, 110x19, 17, 16, 15, 14
Wrist Curls (Cable): #6+2.5kg x20, 13, 11, 9, 8

Mobility all done fine and rows started off with an anticipated tight feeling in my upper back but still could move fine with no issues, managed to up the weight and even get more reps out, no form deterioration either IMO. Chins were a little clunky in the shoulder, reps a little quicker than usual to avoid the pendulum effect of my orangutan arms, but all went well, 5 sets and good reps. Nearly upped the shrug weight but thought my sore back wouldn't like it so stuck with 37s, did more reps and more sets so job done more than well enough there. Kept spider curls the same, did try a couple of reps on the 17s but could see that would drop too quick, same sets, more reps and felt fine hitting biceps well in this rep range it feels. I did up rope curls knowing I had a set to work with, which was just as well as I did lose a few reps but then it was a 7.5 increase. Long one today as I still had 2 more to go, calf work went well, had to focus on upper bracing but up 5kg and hit the same total reps on raises. Wrist curls added a 2.5, short and painful rest periods but got the job done.

So having weight on your upper back hurts more than rowing? That about right?

Does sound like a pulled muscle. Can't discount that fact that those smaller back muscles take a long time to come right as you are using them constantly. Additionally you've not given it any rest either.

How about replacing squats for the remainder of this block with some other leg exercise where you don't put a load on upper back?

This is my last progressive week (well it will be now anyway), next week is a deload. But yeah, holding the weight up there is more painful than actually using it on any other exercise (probably due to it more specifically triggering what went wrong when I did it). Traps feel really tight which suggests a bit of compensatory battling going on there. And I also am inclined to agree with the suggestion that if it's something deeper and smaller in an area that is under constant use just for support and posture then the lack of rest time won't ease the issue

Deload week is a perfect opportunity to just bin the squats and give it a proper rest. Then you can program in some more 'upper back friendly' exercises!

Some things just need a little rest rather than 'probing' lol

Take it from a man who refuses to stop training with a dodgy back lol.
