Do I NEED to do squats?

I'm focusing purelly on getting my upper body (abs, arms, chest) stronger and more muscular but people keepin saying to do squats.

I don't understand why I would need to do them at all, I don't want to work my legs out?!

    A few reasons,

You will look stupid with a big upper body and no legs
Your legs support your body, and the extra weight your going to gain
Squats use more muscles, therefore create a bigger hormone response, HGH and Testosterone, and will therefore help your upper body grow more...

Theres three reasons, if you dont want to do them, then dont...no one really cares!

I've just started lifting weights seriously in order to help with my performance playing rugby. Every single session I start off with squats, dead lifts and bench press. I'v been at it a month and can see the visual improvements in my physique as well as felling twice as strong on the rugby pitch aswel.

What IT Man said, except I would also add:

    1. You say you want to work your abs, well squatting works your abs and the rest of your core better than any other exercise (except maybe deadlifts and the olympic lifts, but I am presuming you also don't want to do the former and you are definitely not going to be doing the latter)

    2. They increase your metabolism so may potentially help you burn some fat if you are so inclined

    3. If you don't squat you're a pussy

    4. Why do you not want to work your legs? They take up half your body, you would look ridiculous with a big muscular upper body and skinny legs (I say 'would' instead of 'will' because it will most likely never happen that way for most people because anybody I know who doesn't care about their legs just doesn't take training seriously enough to ever achieve much muscularity anywhere, and I have never seen anybody with an impressive squat that wasn't muscular).

All I know is, most people want to add muscle to their whole body, not just half their body, so if you want to work out the other half of your body then squats are a staple. And I know for me personally I find all my lifts go up when I am squatting and when I stop squatting for whatever reason my other lifts seem to stagnate. If you squat your whole body will respond.

And as an aside, if you want a muscular upper body you will have to work out your back, not just your chest and arms like you're saying.

Do you NEED to do Squats? No, you don't.

SHOULD you do Squats? Yes you bloody should.

You are really selling your self short if you don't squat. (for all the reasons stated above)

Craig, I think enough has been said already, though another point to remember is that if you are eating a diet for bulking and you don't train your legs then you are missing out on training half your body and the excess cals not burnt from training your legs will appear as fat gains. In short, it is needed to squat.

Yeh as has been mentioned above one of the best compound exercises you can have in your routine for a number of reasons, so definately incorporate them into your programme.

You don't HAVE to do them.

I have found sumo deadlifts the best leg/core/upper back excercise bar none.

You don't need to. Your upper body will grow just fine without squatting.

nope you dont have to do them, heavy leg press is a good alternative, if your goal is to build just quad devolopment, squats are fundementally the king of all exercises for a big reason, heavy loads thru the body will tax most of your muscles to some degree or other,   but without them you are selling yourself short...

You can get a decent upper body without ever doing a leg workout, no question about that. But you'll look like a tit on the beach, unless you plan on wearing chinos

    Current training: 6-day split
Current cycle: Test E @ 500mg per week

    Current stats:
    Height : 192cm
    Weight : 272lbs
    Body Fat : 15.4%

I dont currently do squats, but not out of choice, i have hip bursitis and it absolutely kills.
I am devestated, but still do a leg workout, i can leg press but i have to keep legs v close together or it hurts, then i just finish off with leg extensions and ham curls/calf raises.

I almost feel a leg workout is incomplete without squats to be honest and if i could do them, i would without a doubt.

I squat and deadlift every week, but I think there's a lot of unnecessary fundamentalism in response to craig's question. Someone that comes to the board saying they want to just get their arms, chest and abs bigger obviously isn't looking to become a professional powerlifter.

The real answer to craig's question is no you don't need to squat, but you will probably make only 80% of the gains you would if you did choose to squat. If that is a choice you're willing to make then go for it.

Most of the responses are basically saying you have to squat or just not bother at all, which is nonsense.
