Do you know when to stop?

I'm sat at home tonight watching tv, giving the gym a miss as i just don't physically feel up to it and i've had a couple of cans with dinner. I have a problem with knowing when to stop on a lot of things - it could be food, booze, drugs, even talking. I don't know if it's a self destructive thing or what.

I should just be having another 2 maybe 3 cans and i'll watch some TV as there is a new episode of Entourage and True Blood ready and waiting to be watched.

I do feel a pull towards just saying fcuk it and polishing off anything alcoholic in the house till i fall asleep but with any luck i'll play things sensibly instead.

What stops you from pushing things beyond the edge?

    Wife.
I am rationed to approx a dozen cans a year.
No interest in drugs, can only eat till I feel sick, but do have a problem with cigarettes.
In fact, when I run out of them, I have to get in the car and drive at once to get some more. Blooming things.

So, I guess I have a willpower problem with another "vice" aside from yours, mate.

Work in the morning curbs my excesses but I don't have a problem with booze so don't need to think of reasons not to drink.

Keeping available booze to a minimum in the house would be a start? Its a Monday night mate you dont want to be getting the week off to this sort of start.

Knowing the aftermath, the hangover and feeling down.

Didn't work for me on Sat though, first bevvy for about 6 months and just kept drinking and drinking and eating chocolate and cake.  Once all the crap food and drink is out of the house I control it by just not buying stuff that would tempt me.

yes I get this all the time tbh i am a terrible binger both alcoholic and food

Especially with the drink it is a problem- i rarely drink nowadays but when I do there is invariably trouble because I drink way too much and can't handle it because i do it so infrequently!

As for food im a bit like the pringles ads once you pop you just can't stop! only for me i can come close to popping as I can gorge myself way to much!

Anyway It is a relatively rare occurence but I have been known to order two full meals from the chinese with both rice and noodles and drink and prawn crackers and eat the lot followed by a couple of rolo cookies!

    oh the shame

I really doubt that i'll be turning a few drinks into a massive session - honestly.

I just do feel the urge. I wonder if it's something that will always be there. Always worth turning to the forums for advice support and of course ridicule

It could be anything with me though - it's like a distraction. I could end up playing pool for hours and getting silly focused on certain shots or a cleanup. Or it might be tidying the shed.

Right now am listening through a Now That's What I Call Music collection i 'obtained' in the last couple of days

    Respect my musical tastes!

I've tried the don't buy booze or whatever - but that's not really the root of it.

I'm seeing a counsellor, and i'm on antidepressants - but psychology in any form is so exponentially complicated.

I could do the same thing as tonight and be fine many times - tonight i'm actually reasonably ok. I can feel slight mood swings, but that's probably more to do with certain issues on my mind.

I've had my moments with alcohol and drugs- lost a couple of years actually.
I work in the music industry and it is easy to do.
I've done anti-depressants- in the end it was the weight-lifting and cardio that lifted me out of everything.
    Took 2 years though.

I've turned by obsessive personality to good use though- I drink hardly at all these days but turn my energy towards fitness & weight training, eating right.

You can turn anything around if you want to do it enough.

    very very true

I went to a counsellor for a while when I was depressed and did some things I am a little ashamed of and really really hope I never do again and although I found it helpful I think the only person that can really help you is yourself

I stopped going after a while and I haven't looked back

I did think i would stop going as soon as i felt i was getting nothing from the sessions. At this point though it's one of the few outlets i have - although i am inherently a sceptic when it comes to these things and myself. At the end of the day that person is being paid to sit there and listen to you. That combined with my inability to stop when talking can be interesting.

yes I am also most definitely a cynic when it comes to this type of thing but at the end of the day if you think it is helping you keep going

Good news i think - finishing my 5th can now and i should leave it at that.

Disappointed that i really don't feel anything from it. Hopefully it will at least help me sleep better.

I have to controll now as getting wasted has put me in to many low situations:

I once woke up in a bathtub in a brothel in rochdale naked (ok not so low) But me and my mate had spent 1000's on sex and drugs, was fun though.

Have fallen off a cliff and severley damaged my cruciate ligament/head i walked back to my villa, woke up spent two weeks in hospital in tenerife

Been pulled over for drink driving before passing my test, was stupid

Woke up in a police cell and was told i was going to spend 5+ years in prison, 9 months later and 6 visits to the crown court i was a free man but only because i had an extremley good barrister.

Im over it all now but the fact of the matter is i have to controll my alcohol now as just one bad night could change my life for ever. Some people are lucky that they can go and get totally wasted and not think about it, others have to think twice.
