Do you text whilst driving?

Heard on the radio today that "apparantly" sending a text message whilst driving at 55mph, you will have taken your eyes off the road for the distance of a football pitch.

Seems quite a distance, and not sure where the information has came from - but scarey stuff non the less.

I can text without looking at my phone so I am out of the equation.

I don't, if I ever see anyone who does I usually follow the fckers and issue a severe warning!  I just think, what if my missus was driving the other way.  Fcking hate people smoking whilst driving too, just as bad, fckers!

No, unless I'm at lights that I know give me a good minute beore I get a green again (altho then I guess I'm not technically driving - doubt the law would see it that way I must confess).... but even that is an extreme rarety as TBH I am never more than 10 mins from my end destination so it can always wait.

    Seriously?

Are you in a position of authority - i.e policeman? I only ask as you say that you issue a sever warning?

As for smoking, I do not smoke - and also hate smoking to be honest, but I see it no different to eating or drinking.

The message is fine to wait, I am the same I dont often text when driving as I never drive far enough where it cannot wait until I stop.

I was just suprised at the scenario they have gave as an example - i.e taking your eyes off the phone to look at your phone, you have in theory drove the length of a football picth with your eyes closed.

I cannot imagine, even if I did read my phone , I would surely look up at the road before I had traveled the length of a football pitch?

    QUE: Rightyho and his maths

    Speed = 55mph
Distance = Length of football pitch
Time off road = 5 seconds

    is this correct? ;)

I wait, either pull over or save it till I'm at the end of the journey. I find mobiles very distracting when driving - if you do send a message then next minute you've got one back you want to take eyes of road again to read.

Touching your phone is illegal when driving and I've seen to many people have near misses using them either to call, or to text.

Wasn't someone on here ranting about a driver who was on his phone the other day, almost caused an accident and ended up with his dog hitting the dashboard?

    Sounds a bit hypocritical.

By the way, is there a hands free system for texting?

but would you really take the time to turn around and follow the car until you could have a chance to issue the warning? (which I imagine would only be when their car stopped and you could get access to them, which could be another 25miles?)

Is it worth it? I cant imagine for one moment that they would take any notice. And if somebody took the time to follow me, I would expect more than a severe warning.

yeah it was rightyho , but he wasnt the one on the phone, it was the person in front, or that cut him up who was on his phone, I beleive rightyho played no part in the wrong doing that caused his dog to crash into the dash board. Is was the other driver. Unles I am mistaken,

Of course I don't, usually respond with shaking my fist and yelling "FUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKEEEEEEEEERRRR", unless I'm in a particularly bad mood!

Yeah I've done it a hell of a lot to be honest- but I rarely if ever do it now, I guess I just came to my senses.  No close calls or anything though, I don't really need to look at it so when cruising my other hand could just be doing it, and if anything changed, just dropped it on my lap.

As said- don't really do it now, though have done it loads in the past.

    Unaffiliated.

Once knocked one off when driving. Stupid 18 year old- wouldn't recommend it!

I now intend to drive with a bit more care.
