Do you think Bruce Lee would have been at top level MMA or UFC ?

Do you think Bruce Lee would have been at top level MMA or UFC if he'd been around now and in his prime?

Not unless he was willing to go on gear and pack on 50lbs of muscle.

Even if he was the most skilled fighter in the world physical strength counts for a lot and he was tiny.

What about Tyson? If he was fighting old school rules like in the early UFC days? - understandably he's a stand up fighter but he's also a really nasty mudafuka

Standing up Tyson is a menace and would do well in any competition. We can only speculate if he'd be any good at ground fighting, but without that he'd be useless at MMA.

It entirely depends on his ground game and ability to take a punch.

If his striking was Anderson Silva level then no, I dont get the tiny comment, he would fight at the weight class relevant to him.

If you are referring to the old school rules and no weight class then he would have had difficulties. Would been interesting to see him fight someone like don fyre or tank abbott.

Bruce is a legend, and rightly so... The stories of his antics, fights and feats are amazing. and in his time he was the man.

Would he still be the man if he was in his prime now, hard to say but his worth ethic and dedication to his training and craft were second to none, so he would have done very well in my mind.

Although with modern day MMA now, it's such an open concept, but I think for his weight class and if he was alive and competing today, he would do well.

He was extremely fast, VERY strong for his size and had superb levels of conditioning...

He'd be up against the likes of Aldo in his weight category. I think he would have a hard time. It's one thing looking good for thr camera, but when you've had your leg smashed with a leg kick and forearms kneed so you can no longer keep your hands up, I think it's a different ball game.

Of course, but do you honestly think he would be a sitting duck?

If Bruce was around today and training for MMA, he would be more diverse and well drilled in his craft.

The problem being, it's a good 40 years since Bruce died, and footage of his fights are rare, and his feats are hard to confirm and comprehend.

I'm not a Bruce Lee expert, and my knowledge of current MMA is poor, so I can't really give you a debate, plus it is of course silly to argue really over a fighter from 40 years ago, with today's modern fighters.

Lol bruce lee didnt fight anyone of note. He was very fit and fast but he was an actor and did not have real fighting experience. Im not knocking him and what he did for martial arts i worshipped him from a young age. I liked sly in rocky too and im sure in his prime he could box the lugs off your average joe with no real fighting experience but could he hang with a pro boxer? No way at any weight.

He wasn't a master of anything either apart from jun fan gung (kung) fu lol. I know lads that competed in real chinese boxing (choi lee fut) with years training and fighting experience who would give him a good slap.

Re: Do you think Bruce Lee would have been at top level MMA or UFC ? 2014/11/21 14:14:28 (permalink)
Firstly weight is not an important matter as he would fight in featherweight where he would be more than capable in terms of S&C.

Secondly as someone said he was a master of Kung Fu and the striking elements it progressed however lets not forget at the time BJJ or MMA was not like it is now. Anyone with the capability to complete an arm bar triangle kimura would have had a HUGE advantage over everyone at the time. Bruce Lee was learning Submissions/wrestling and known to be "proficient" but obviously not a master like his Kung Fu. However to be a very competent in MMA you don't need to be master of everything.

Thirdly as I touched on already really MA were limited to Judo, Karate and Kung Fu. Thai Boxing, BJJ etc were not on the global scene so at this time he would not have had the ability to train with people in these fields. However one thing we can assume is that he was an avid and dedicated practitioner of martial arts and had these been available to him then he certainly would have trained in those disciplines.

So where does it leave us. Well we know he was a skilled striker, dedicated student and extremely well conditioned. What we don't know is 1) Could he stand in a real tough guy fight rumours say yes but hard facts are slightly thing on the ground, 2) Was he a big fish in a small pond compared to modern times where he would be one of many in a large pond.

IMHO anyone who is dedicated, trains hard and has the mental fortitude plus some natural ability could make it to the UFC. Bruce Lee clearly had those traits and I don't see any reason why if we cloned a 12 year Lee and he had more training, better nutrition and better knowledge he wouldn't make it to be honest.

Do I think Bruce Lee in his prime would have been able to step up and compete as it stands today with the big boys. No I do not he would get beaten but I don't think it would be a pure ass whopping as some suggest.

He was only a master of a style that he founded himself? If i founded a style i would be a master, i would be the foremost exponent of said style.  He didn't master Wing chun? Obviously if he trained in MMA now he MAY be decent  and be able to make SOME progress, but if you took him as he was with his capabilities when he was alive-he would get embarrased in the cage and his myth would be squashed, which would be a shame. He was an actor and a martial artist- he wasn't a fighter in the sense of top level mma dudes.

Tyson would have got battered the moment it went to the desk, all the old skool UFC was dominated by wrestlers and bjj players. Nobody would have stood and traded with him, Tyson has an Aura about him similar to Bruce Lee where people believe him to be better than he was. He was an excellent boxer but in no way was he in the elite imo though I would kill for his movement. His relatively small size but large muscles would have really ground out his cardio not to mention the ease with which he would have been manipulated via the shoulders lock.

I beg to differ, Tyson was in the elite. Think he would have beaten the best of the heavy weights in his prime. Excellent boxer, movement power and skill but more importantly he was a fooking animal who dominated his opponents and was abolusely relentless.
