Does anyone happen to know? VoIP (skpe etc) no phone line?

Hi,

Does any of you technical type peeps know anything about VoIP (voice over IP)?
... Such as skype etc.

1. Can you have this set up without a actual phone line?
2. If so... where does your phone number then come from?
3. Can you actually have a broardband connection without a telephone service?
4. Would VoIP generally work OK over a 801.11g 108Mbps wireless network?
5. What do you guys think in general about VoIP... the future? good? bad?

Skype or voipcheap.co.uk seems like the future to me... especially voipcheap as VoIP calls to normal landlines are free even internationally. VoIP to VoIP are obviously free on both anyway.

cheers

You need a phone line. i believe that answers the majority of the questions :P

You cant have the internet without some medium to connect... this case the phone line... mob phones etc are different. No i dont think its the future.. its not completey free. Things like it have been around for ages... iv used Teamspeak for online gaming since day one...
Yes u can use it with your wireless, its still the same tcp/ip protocols etc etc

    information on sky/voip

Yes, if you have SkypeIn - they will allocate a number for people to ring you. Naturally, there is a charge for the service.

Very good indeed. The major players are waking up fast to this technology.

I don't think it'll make much difference in the end TBH - at least not to us as consumers

As far as the technology goes - it's great ! and for early adapters ATM ,yes you can save a fortune - but innevitabley it'll all get regulated and VOIP wil simply become the vehicle over which all our telecommunications are dealt - there may be *some* savings , but we'll pretty much end up in the same position we are now

    Shame

    OK
so say I want to use VoIP in a new shop, is this right...
    - get a BT phone line
    - get a ISP (internet service provider) to supply broardband (probably pipex)
    - then get VoIP software and hardware

^^^ how do other VoIP then make calls to me so they can call for free? what number do they use?
calls to landlines are free on www.voipcheap.co.uk so I am thinking on using that, but will Skype users be able to call me free?

    So I will pay...
    - BT line rental
    - ISP ADSL charge
    - No calls will be made on BT so just pay my VoIP credit.

    thanks in advance

Im not sure but i think you all have to be using the same software, ie to call your friend they have to have Skype if you do.

I could be wrong as i know very little abou it, but im pretty sure thats how we ha dto set our up, or maybe cause of ease it was done that way.

Also would be handier to get a wirless acess point to ure broadband, effectivly giving you a cordles phone.

You can get DECT dual phones http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=17536 that can do normal calls and VoIP calls... so it will be wireless that way... look's the best bet to me.

It will be a wireless network though Netgear Wireless modem/firewall/router in there anyway like I have at home.
I will also be running wireless IP camera looking out from behind the till and maybe another watching who comes in the door.

Still confused as to where the phone number will come from for VoIP users... or will it just be like adding us to there contacts using our email etc?

and just so you know its going to be VERY easy to listen to your calls becuase all of those services are very insecure, there are lots of programs out ther designed to drop in and listen. espically over the wifi, might want to consider that.

TV plug? I think you mean cable internet. No? Thats if you have cable, mostly blueyonder users have that. Other than that its not the majority... broadband will go through your phone line.

yes but the question was , do you need a phone line, and the answer was a definite no!

and if a majority have got broadband with BT etc its not a huge majority and dsl aint a standard phoneline

By phone line I ment that... a line that is used for the phone.
I know a need a copper pair going to the exchange...
The line rental for a phone line is about £10 a month, I wanted to know if you could have your broadband going down the line without the charge for telephone support etc... maybe the rental will be reduced.
    E.G.
I think there used to be a incoming calls only thing where line rental was reduced... about £17 a quater
^^^ obviously differant to that but the same sort of principle

No, unfortunatly if you get a Bt line you will be charged a nomal line rental then your Broadband connection, wether you make regular phone call's on it or not.

And as for contact numbers Skype is kinda like MSN interface, you have the name of the conatct showing and youjust clink oin them to call them.

Also.....WHAT THE FECK ARE YOU SETTING UP!!!!!!!! lol........by the sounds of it poeple from 24 are gonna have to update to what you have!

Not setting up anything really... was asking about VoIP for a salon I'm opening, free calls to landlines could add up if you was doing a lot of appointment reminders.
    Just weighing up th options.

The other recent Q's have been:
    1. cause I recently got a XDA mini s and wanted sat nav on it,
    2. fixed (sort of) my laptops keyboard,
    3. bought a wireless card for my laptop and had network problems and couldn't RD myself from a mates house when I needed to show him something.
    4. needed fax software I can send and recieve faxes and send word documents by fax on the PC.
    5. not sure if i posted on here but i need help finding out why my PC doesn't like sharing folders but my laptop does!!!!
