Don't swing your arms when you walk; burn 12% more energy?

Monitoring the volunteers' metabolism showed that keeping our arms still as we stroll burns up 12% more energy than swinging them normally. The clumsy anti-swing walk, in which the arm and leg on one side go forward together, uses 26% more energy, as our muscles fight to keep us on course, according to a report in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Is this true?  By energy do they mean calories?

I find that hard to believe, by moving the arms we are expending energy surely?

Anyway I wont be doing that, I always think people who dont move their arms when they walk look odd.

yes but by swinging them we are helping with balance and momentum for our hips and legs

there is next to no resistance on our arms, they're swinging like pendulums almost

perhaps the increased use of muslce in our core, hips and legs for balance and propulsion uses more energy than if we were to swing the arms

just an idea, i'm sure someone more physiologically minded will know the answer

Well your idea is right.  Basically pendulums require very little energy to keep them swinging, twisting the core requires a lot more.  To some extent it'll be that we're not used to walking like that, and so aren't experienced enough to use the muscles efficiently.  The brain will take slightly more juice as well.

I remember seeing an article a few years ago that said swinging your arms will burn more calories.

    Sod it.

What about if you hand-jive while walking? How many calories does that burn?
