Download Saftey

Does anybody have any tips on how to check if a download is clean and virus free etc before running and exposing it fully into your system?

I have heard of sandboxie, but cant get my head around this software.

Any tips would be great.

Depends, where are you downloading it from? I've got several program which will detect a virus straight away/even a malicious link and prevent me from downloading it.

    I personally like:

    Avast
    Ad-aware remover (the new one)
    Spypot

Usually i can't open the software if its dodgy in any shape or form.

If i'm pretty sure my computers infected then a program called Trojan Remover by Simply sups (I think) is amazing.

Kasperksy has a safe run application mode as part of it's Internet security suite (virus/firewall) if you are unsure of a d/l

Shop around and there are deals on this all the time. A good price for 3pc's, 1yr licence would be around £12-£15

These days I just use a application called NOD32 which auto scans everything before/during extraction, only thing I've used for years and I have a lot of faith in it, best IMO.

I repair PCs/Laptops and have used most antivirus/spyware programs.

First of all no single program will give you 100% assurance.

The best free ones are "Microsoft Security Essentials" and "Avast". Both have reasonably good detection rates, the microsoft one doesnt ask for registration or give any popups which is nice.

If you go down the buy route then the best one is "Emsisoft Antimalware", excellent detection rates. "Malwarebytes" is also extremely good.

Stay away from Norton unless you have a very quick laptop

Nortons footprint used to be horrendous. Now it is comparable with the rest.
