Dumbells better than Barbell??

I have had to change to DB presses as bench pressing with a barbell was causing a lot of problems with my left shoulder. As there seem to be more muscles in play the problem is totally gone with the DBs.

Today I got to 40KG on barebell curls including the weight of the bar and found I had a bad pain in my right elbow. I am thinking of changing to DB curls, but want to make sure that this is not the wrong thing to do.

I've been doing all of these exercises with a barbell since I started nearly a year ago and am thinking of changing them to DBs. These include Military press, DB rows instead of bent over rows and curls.

Any opinions on whether this is a good change? Are DBs superior because of the extra muscles involved or is this not always the case??

I think in your case it's an advisable switch. Some say DB's are indeed superior due to more stabiliser muscles being involved, on the other hand I beleive a barbell allows you to use more weight. If you're damaging yourself using a barbell tho, it's no debate is it?

    Franco:

Using a barbell shouldn't create any pains or problems provided that:

    a) You are using good form.
    b) You aren't using too much weight.
    c) You don't have any anatomical issues with your shoulder - i.e. strain, injury, etc

9 times out 10 it's a form issue in my experience.

I do have a problem with my left shoulder. The physio couldn't tell me exactly what it is, but as I said, DB presses solve the problem. As for curls, a lot of people complain of stress on the elbows, but I'm pretty sure my form is strict on curls and my right elbow felt really bad today with the slight increase in weight.

Is there any reason that Barbell work might be considered better. I know the one of the pros of switching to DB work is the use of more muscles but I don't know the cons.

I understand your point, but I've known some guys with amazing physiques that have never touched a dumbbell. That being said, it's good to include some dumbbell work now and then. Here's a thread where we talked about it some.
