Egypt anyone??

Just booked a holiday to egypt (in 3 weeks time) and was wondering if anybody had been recently.. Heard if you leave the complex (which i shouldn't need to as it's 5 star all inclusive), you have to be escorted round by armed guards.. Is this true?

I'd love to go to Egypt and visit the pyramids, always been a dream of mine. But in todays climate of terrorism I doubt I ever will

It makes me laugh people go to western cities and spain when there was terrorism but people are scared to go to places like egypt. Id go got just as much chance being blown up in london than you have in egypt

    From wikipedia

"The security situation in Egypt (as in many Middle Eastern countries) is frequently exaggerated by Western media outlets, creating a negative impression that is somewhat amplified by the heavy-handed policies of Egyptian authorities in keeping tourists safe. The reality is that travelling in Egypt is probably no more hazardous, with regard to terrorism, than visiting most Western capitals (and probably a lot safer!) Egypt relies heavily on foreign tourism for its national income and both Egyptians and their government are extremely keen to prevent any occurrence that might create a bad impression and keep tourists away."

i backpacked around egypt in '95' just after there was some trouble,i never had any probs with anything, the locals will keep you right,i would'nt worry too much, just go there and enjoy yourself, it is wonderous place with the most amazing sight's you will ever see and the people are very freindly and helpful, and in cairo make sure you take a taxi it is a very funny expierience.LOL

Not sure now bro but it was in 1996 when i went, i took a pis* (the only person to get off the coach to do so) and had 2 guys with auto weapons stood by my side. It took me ages to pis8 i can tell you!

2 weeks later, 56 people were shot dead on the same coach we were on and going to the same place.

Ok bombs can go off anywhere but theres more chance of being taken hostage in middle east at the mo . Just my opinion

^^^What he said^^^ Anywhere there is a marked increase in the likelihood of being shot or taken hostage or blown up does not do it for me. A terrible shame but my view is this - if you go somewhere like this and get into trouble then you've only yourself to blame. I do agree that it is probably safer than we imagine but if there is any doubt then it's a no no imo.

    Um no not at all

In the touristy parts there are many many beggars and they will hassle you to death

It's quite safe though TBH, probably safer than taking a walk through London

The women are quite friendly by the way lol

Do you mind if I ask why you're going to Egypt?
My idea of going to a country would be to, erm, see the country It seems like a waste to go somewhere so beautiful and not want to leave a complex. I'd rather save money and stay somewhere similar in Spain if that's the case.
I went to Cairo around a year ago. Had no problems whatsoever, the locals were all friendly and helpful and I found myself smiling all the time. Gorgeous place and I've heard similar opinions of other parts of Egypt too.
Get out there and enjoy a new culture for a few weeks.
On a similar note - my parents wanted to go to Tunisia but put it off for ages due to what others had told them. "You'll be arrested if you take a photo of the flag" etc.... my Mum came home with a pic of the flag, taken outside a police station
Don't believe everything you hear until you've tried it for yourself

Do agree with what you're saying Guvnor, but I could never stop going to places because of this kind of threat.
I was in Phuket the Christmas following Sept 11 attacks. The area was on high alert at the time but no way would I not go. Yeah if something happened I would have myself to blame, but rather that than never live or do the things I want out of the fear of risk.
This kind of behaviour is exactly what terrorists would like to see imo.

I went to Sharm El Shiekh (sp) in Feb and me and the chick personally didn't really like it to be honet. Although we're talking about going back again just to dive as we didn't do any of that.

    Abu Dhabi next in Sept....

i got back for sharm el sheikh last month, it was absolutely fine, no trouble at all.
i didnt go to cairo or luxor or anything though.
make sure you go diving, i was actually addicted to it out there.
get the white and blue taxis, theyre all pug 504s and it is an experience!
I felt like a right bas***d but you have to just so no to people trying to get you in their shops, they are mostly perfume shops and a waste of time
