Engagement rings, how much?

First of all, im not about to propose!!!!!

I was out shopping on sunday when 'she' dragged me into a jewellers to show me the type of ring she would want eventually. I then asked the question of how much it would be expected to cost. The answer was 'atleast 2 months salary, more like 3'.... !!!! ????

After picking myself up of the floor and searching for my jaw i composed myself and smiled.

Im self employed so my actual salary is very poor so it isnt as bad as it may be for others... Thats what made me think.... How much would the average ring cost?

How much have you paid, will you pay or if female do you expect??

Yeah, I think I had heard a months salary or something. Stuff that LOL I got the Mrs the one she wanted for about about £600 IIRC (she'd seen it when we got the one we were given resized so I bought it and had them keep it in teh window. When we picked the original one up I asked if she could she try it on and then told her she doesn't need to take it off. She loved it) ..... if she wanted more than that spent then she was with the wrong the man

I forget the exact figure, but the average wedding costs something like 12 - 15 thousand pounds these days, so 1-2 grand on the ring probably doesnt seem so much.

I went to a wedding a couple of years back where the couple had spent over 20grand on the reception alone.

    Insane, if you ask me....

    Traditionally it's a month...but I suppose really it's what you can 'afford'.

I spent about £120, it was a nice ring and understated as is my gf's style, she would have battered me if I'd spent thousands, she'd rather have the money or spend it on useful stuff.

People spending the figures like tac mentions on weddings is so vulgar it's unreal, especially as most will go into massive debt to fund it.

Agree with you tuc, I'd rather have the money spent on other things and as for the amount people spend on weddings, I find this ridiculous - usually they can't afford it.

I think I'd like to spend quite a lot. Definitely more than a month or two's salary. After all, it's not often that you buy such things (hopefully!)

I know a lad who spent £2500 on a ring and took nearly all of it on finance.... ????? He earned just over a grand a month.

I also know a bloke who bought a 50 quid special from elizabeth duke (argos) and told his mrs it cost a fortune. 2 years after, 1 of the stones fell out... She took it to a local jeweller to see if she could repair i without her husband finding out.... hahaha.... She was mortified when she found out the truth and my mate was in the dog house for the next 6 months. lmao!

he's the type who will repeat the cycle for the rest of his life...........buy something you can't afford on finance, pay it off for several years, repeat forever

good luck to him, does the ring make him or his gf any happier? I imagine not, unhappier is more likely

    I've puchased twice!!!

Both times got them the one they wanted, first one IIRC was around a grand, second one around 1500, but the second one included a discount as I knew the shop owner.

Nope..... She cleaned me out bro, the ring was the least of my worries!!! I'd say it's either in a pawn shop or stuck in a jewellery box!
