Of course, no one knows.

This is an interesting perspective and one that's been criticised as there are a lot of hypothesies, but it's worth a watch.

Great thread people and one of the few I have read right through on the general section.

I have no doubt there is life elsewhere. It happened once it will happen again. Chances of us ever coming into contact with it however, let alone existing in the same narrow window of time as it, is so remote it's not worth thinking about.

I love Govindas point though... if I was an advanced being cruising past this planet and pulled up for a look, I'd pi$$ off pretty quickly and leave us to kill each other. It would be the equivalent of you on a night out passing an alley and seeing a huge pack of dogs biting, eating and fvcking each other. I doubt very much you'd go an introduce yourself LOL.

On The Flop
This stuff blows my mind.

There are approximately 8.7 million different species of life on Earth. How did that happen, how did that incredible amount of diverse 'life' end up on a very small Planet, how are each biologically engineered to absolute near perfection???

If this 'life' all came from meteorite strikes after the earth's creation, then where did these countless meteorites originate from, and how did they all find their way to this tiny lump of rock in space??

As a species have we reached the end of our evolution, or will we evolve further into something unrecognisable to what we are now???

we are nowhere near biologically engineered to perfection. not even close. blindness,  deafness, cancer, diabetes, etc, etc, anyone ?

They are conditions though not part of evolution in general , the majority of people dot have these conditions have increased of late and we may evolve so that we become immune though, if your looking for flaws in evolution , theres the exmaple of the eye being back to front and the laryngeal nerve of a giraffe being a bit of a cock up, I certainy dont think we where created perfectly from a deity.

I think it would be more sad if we are the height of achievement the universe can manage.

I don't think there is a limit to what heights intelligence can achieve over millions if not billions of years. What will hold humans back is our inability to live in harmony with each other.

Agree , but after reading the selfish gene , maybe this is as far as life goes before we self destruct ? Who knows? The more selfish we get the more successful but theres probably a crossover between being so selfish and destructive that we annihilate ourselves thinking it enables a few to survive.   The current trend of population growth doesn't look sustainable long term, I don't see how that can end well . In our lifetimes we may well see some cataclysmic event, but then again it may be hundreds of years away. Tech is innovating at a massive rate though so who knows.

I did mean in the grand scheme of things, ie..99.9% of us more fortunate ones.

Our bodies have been engineered to process sight, sound, taste, touch. We eat something and our body has an internal waste disposel plant working to dispose of the nasty stuff, we get ill and our body produces anti-bodies etc to fight an infection for example, we cut ourselves(general small cuts btw)and the body repairs the damage.

It's incredible to think only evolution did this. We're walking miracles.

that's like the puddle argument.

Someone looks at a puddle and says f4ck me that puddle has been perfectly designed to fit in that hole in the floor, its fits in perfectly so it must have been designed , is the puddle a miracle ?

I respect others beliefs, but I am still baffled that people still think there is a more plausible explanation than evolution.

There's no 'will' or design to it... just a bunch of little random variances over time which sometimes gives an individual an edge over the others, ie. makes them more successful so they outlast the others. It's descendants then inherit those little traits and the process continues until you have a very different creature. Consider that we are 98.6% identical to a chimpanzee genetically speaking. True cousins!

I imagine life on another planet would work to the same rules. Ie. survival of the fittest.

Indeed. Until there is actual evidence that supases that which supports the theory of evolution via natural selection than everything else is a poor hypothesis at best.

.. and technically dinosaurs are not extinct. I've had some for tea this week :)
