FAO Dr Z and other Mac Heads

I'm just about to spooge an awful lot of money on a Mac Pro and I want to know how much difference there will be in performance/render time between a quad core and and 8 core Xeon (both with 8GB ram).

It's for editing high end video.

The quad is £2100 and the 8 core is £2580 - is it worth the extra £500?

I'm going to win a prize for the dullest posts soon.....

Great find - that answers it really.

I didnt think it'd be twice as fast and it turns out it's about 25% faster - so probably not worth the extra £500.

What quality video are you going to be editing?

    DV? DVCHD? etc

On reflection , that appears to be a bit dated now  - may be worth digging a little more
From what I gather the benefits are apllication specific ,someone doing your kind of work day in day out  is going to see the benefits far more than a casual user like myself !

R3D - 2k (not as heavy as the 4k but still very heavy when compared to DV)

I'm just a tight arse really - If I can get away with quad I'd do it but I dont want to waste 2 grand for the sake of an extra £500 if that makes sense.

It turns out I can actually do it on my intel macbook but I cant watch it and have to render everything first which takes hours - just to preview it.

What kinda length of footage are we talking at a time, with sound?...do you have to make a full render and output on the pro as well?

Depends how well the app is multithreaded, this goes for macs and pcs...not like there's a difference in hardware anymore.

I'm using FCS2 and there is no R3D codec for anything other than intel mac (until the week after I buy an 8 core when they will no doubt release a codec that means you can do it on a pocket calculator...)

It's 40 minutes worth down to 10 minutes - full 5.1 surround sound

Id go for the 8 Core TBH, most fellas handling that are waiting for long mixdown and render times as it is with even more RAM.

Quad core, more RAM, get a fast RAID 0 inside the machine for your rendering space. job done.

Having run extensive tests on the quad compares to the Octo (setup a few in the BBC) there isnt much difference in them. They got Octo's because the few minutes they saved means a lot more than the cost difference.

If your only ever going to be editing 2k footage i'd go for the quad.
