Flaxseed

I've just purchased a big bag of flaxseed, been having a tbs with my cottage cheese before bed, i heard that you can only benefit from it if it is ground? Something to do with your body not breaking it down...Wasn't the most reliable source who told me, but thought i'd enquire about it anyway!

Thanks in advance :-)

You need to grind down the flax seeds in order to get the fats from them, yes.

Once grinded, keep it in a air-tight container in the fridge.

very cheap considering usual serving for males is around 50g so 5kg would last you around 3-4 months id say. They also do things like spirulina and other seeds which are human grade. I also have a cheap supplier for organic wheatgrass powder too if anyone wants that

well i base my servings on 50g which is where most of good fats would come from in terms of O3 content. IMO i dont think anymore needed as 25g of Flax oil is more than enough in my book ED. SOme people may need more, some may need less, i know women need less as they can convert the ALA to DHA/EPA better than men can

According to Calorieking and Nutritiondata per 100g its 534 cals 42.2g fat 18.3g pro 29g carbs 27.3g fibre

As for the O3 content theres a great site i found which says what proportions of EFA are contained within in nuts and seeds http://www.annecollins.com/dietary-fat/omega-3-efa-6-chart.htm

Tesco charge me £4ish for 450g of ready-ground flax. But it's organic and comes in sexy packaging, so I'm ok with it.

I think I saw ready-ground stuff in sainsbury's but it's twice that price. The prices of the bulk suppliers are off the scale.

Thanks for the fast response! Bought them from the local market, organic! Was £3 for two 1kg bags. Not bad i thought.... So i can pre grind them if there kept in a container in the fridge, how long would they last for? I was told that you had to eat them pretty much straight away for it to have effect (get required fats being the so called effect!)

i wouldnt grind them all up at once as oxidisation isnt best for EFA based fats. Grind some up for 1-2 days use then grind some more when you run out, As Malika suggested store them in a airtight container inside the fridge for storage of the ground flax meal.

Also great article here about Fats as well http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/article-good-bad-fat.aspx
