Getting a cheaper service from someone abroad?

Say you were looking for someone to do some work for you and found someone based in another country where the cost of living was a lot lower than your country which meant they could charge less than someone based in your country, would you be ok hiring them at the expense of the person based in your country?

This is assuming the thing you wanted them to do could be done remotely and the service would be of the same quality.

Would you 'buy British' or take the lower quote?

Also, if you were the one offering the service how would you feel about targeting overseas markets where you could under cut the natives?

    Take the lower quote.

Why pay more for the same quality service?.

The days of 'Buy British' are finished.

and the service would be of the same quality.

That is the key to it. In my experience, through work, cheap overseas work is never of the same quality, or they don't deliver on time, or it is mixed quality or higer scrappage. There is always something to justify the word "cheap". It depends on what it is I suppose but very little outsourcing does not ultimately come back. Just hope that the dumped supplier is still in business to come back to

Value is the real key to it.

I am not so sure , I know this sounds very unpatriotic - and believe me I'd prefer it if this was true , but I feel this is  simply a cop out  ,  People used to use this line of thought to bash "Cheap Japanese crap" , now it is generally accepted that "japanese crap" offers better reliabilty and VFM most of the time !
My old company originally got it's main product from Italy , they supplied a Top quality product at a moderate price , we got licence and tried to get the same , simple product produced by several UK based fabricators , and the best we could acheive was a poorer quality product at a slightly higher price than Italy (including the cost of transpoting it from italy !! )    - We eventually sourced from China -  and got a top quality version of our product for a vastly better price  -  of course we could have got a dirt cheap poorer quality version if that is what we wanted,  but the Chinese fabricator were prepared to provide whatever we asked for in terms of quality  - the reason Chinese manufacturing is getting this "rubbish" label , is because opportunists are gettign stuff manufactured for next to nothing !  (THEIR spec ,not the chinese fabrictors fault !!)

Interesting about the China source and specifying your own quality level.

One of the reason I asked was that I am going to be living in a cheaper part of the world and was thinking of offering a service targeted at the UK market but at a lower price than I would charge if I lived in the UK where cost of living is higher.  I was wondering if it was a bit sneaky and unethical.

    Hmm.

People forget a lot of premium brands are manufactured in China too.  They are well capable of producing products to any standard.

There have been a few scandals though, lead paint in toys for one, that I think that the Chinese maybe don't always make it clear just exactly how many corners will get cut to get the product out at the low prices they offer to buyers.

I used to use a Brazilian researcher years back.
He'd spend two or three days on a project for me. I'd pay him £50, then sell news articles based around his research for £350/1000 words.

He got paid. I made cash. All happy.

Assuming similar quality youd have to go for the lower quote.
