Really tragic.  Does anybody know what happened?  Mechanical fault?

It is not yet clear what happened. Some speculation that the driver may have suffered a heart attack.

That was my first thought, some kind of fit or heart attack.

We were in the city center the day before and it was crazy complete chaos. So many lives ruined over Christmas, sadly the lorry drivers life will be ruined as well even if it was not really his fault - unless of course he knew he had a serious heart condition or other condition that could have caused him to fall I'll, then I'll be less sympathetic torwards him.

Hopefully the families get some closure and find out what exactly happened, I don't really listen to the crap on the news usually it's just that crap.

Why less sympathetic if he knew he had a heart condition?  If he had a known condition, maybe the reason why he was placed behind the wheel rather than lifting bins?  Not sure what the councils view is on this.

I believe he would have had regular medicals to keep his licence.
I know HGV drivers are required to have this.
Yes he is going to need a lot of counselling.
    Tragic for all involved.
Lets hope the media dont go on a blame campaign with this.

Probably be best to find out the actual cause first.

Wasn't there other dustbin men beside him, cause usually there's a fair few guys in those trucks at a time?

Think there were mate but I never thought until someone ssidbit last nite. How do you stop a runaway vehicle if it has an electronic handbrake? In a hurry that is.
Feel so sorry for the families affected, including the driver.

Guess so in the heat of the moment, but obviously would have been a greater chance for prevention if there was.

It's said to be a heart attack now, thought it'd be too soon to find out though.

I have a friend I who blames himself for the death of a family in a car crash but legally he was found to be not at fault. Still blames himself though and hasn't been the same since.

I'd be less sympathetic if he just found out about a problem and didnt tell anyone and took a chance and hoping he'd be okay, he wouldn't be allowed behind the wheel if he had any known serious medical conditions.

Itv news reported last night that there was two other people beside the driver who was thought to have had a heart attack whilst driving, obviously couldn't manage to stop him unfortunately.

My step dad said he read that two other guys in the lorry jumped out, questioned weather they were trained to use the dead man's handbrake or something. If they weren't trained in using it Glasgow city council are in alot of trouble

i am sure as a  super hero like yourself Clark Kent you would remember what to do in an emergency like this and have saved everyone, and be meeting the queen at Buckingham palace in the new year for a medal
