Good films that aren't about crime or violence?

Does a film need to be about (or heavily involve) crime and violence in order for you to enjoy it?

Can you name any non animation/non comedy films that are not about crime/violence that you really enjoyed?

At present the only one I can think of is 'The Remains of the Day'.

Oh there are countless thousands of classic and modern dramas, comedies, biopics and musicals out there. Do you want a list?

I bet that many of them will have a crime/violent narrative, perhaps without it even being all that obvious.

I agree with you Suspiro.  I love horror films but only because it's fantasy (I hate the rape/torture 'horror' films), but really dislike the glorification of violence and crime in cinema and games.

For classics, I go with Bergman or Tarkovsky.  Modern would be Wes Anderson or Michael Haneke (though probably not 'funny games').  Lars Von Trier is another favourite although his films often contain violence, it's either off camera or portrayed in a non-glamorous fashion.

Interesting topic, because nearly all the top films contain either, and usually both.  Which itself is a scary thought.

I can't even think of one.  I watched 'Left Behind' recently, and as it's a film depicting the beginning of the end times described in the Bible,  as a Christian film it's therefore has all the sex, violence taken out, and the producers made a go of it, but even then I can't include it, as some crime (looting) is depicted.

I don't regard myself as someone who likes violence in real life but when I watch a film I want to feel stimulated and entertained.

Providing you have the technical people behind you (cameraman, sound guys etc) I think it's probably relatively easy to make a half decent gangster film. That's why although I quite like Guy Ritchie's better films such as Snatch and Lock Stock I would not look on him as being in anyway gifted. I can't think of even one of the great directors who it can be said did not make a career out of making films about crime and violence.

Even with TV dramas I'm the same. I can't watch a drama unless it's about crime or violence like a murder mystery or a crime thriller (Happy Valley, Breaking Bad, The Wire etc). I have no idea what something like Downton Abbey is as it's entire premise turns me off completely but is this perhaps a rare example of a successful and highly watchable TV programme that is almost entirely without crime or violence?

If it is then where does the stimulation come from? Are we hypocrites for claiming that murder and violence is wrong and abhorrent but yet we watch it every evening for entertainment purposes?

I haven't seen it but I was under the impression that it does contain a lot of implied violence and peril towards a young girl?

It's hard if you're not letting us include comedies tbh. The Descendants springs to mind.

Yeah sort of but I wouldn't call it so violent. I suppose it is a bit but nothing to write home about.

It depends on the level of the violence. For instance, Local Hero (1983) is a delightfully whimsical feelgood film. But if you consider the unseen death of a rabbit to satisfy a hotel visitor's lunch grossly untoward then it's virtually a video nastie
