Hard to explain - muscle memory?

It's weird, before I got into bodybuilding properly I used to do chins and curls basically thinking I'lld turn into Jay Cutler in no time. The I researched properly, sorted the diet out and got into a good routine and making gains I'm proud of. But I never trained my chest before then went straight into a 3x8 routine and the gains have been fantastic. But for example my back, because I used to do chins (perhaps) I have seen the worst gains ....is this because they are not getting enough intensity as they have adapted to the little stress I put on them when I used to chinup. In which case what is required to shock it into some growth like other areas? Up the intensity?
Might be me being stupid but ive definitely noticed that the gains have been best on muscles that I havent trained before and went straight into a 3x8 routine with. Anyone any ideas?

Its funny you say this, cos when i was younger and a complete newb, i'd do loads of press ups and dumb bell curls thinking i was going to look like the hulk by the end of it. now i know what im doing and hav a good enought diet and routine the only place im gaining like crazy is my back, maybe it has something to do with what i used to do
