Have i gone to far??

I live next door to a young couple early twentys maxium just them no children.
Between my house and next doors is a 2 meter gap split by a fence we both have gates at the end of the walkway. Mine is always locked with a padlock. Theres is always open, wide open. When its windy it bangs. this is quiet loud. 99% i have to go outside and shut the gate myself, there is a latch that holds the gate shut no issue. Iv repeatdly asked them to make sure it shuts tried to be friendly and they seem to just pay me lip service. So last night at 4am they came back from NYE celenbrations and for some reason decided the best way to enter the house was from the rear and they left the gate open. i had to go down and shut it as it woke everyone up. I pulled the lad up this afternoon and he promised me it wont happen again.
Twenty minutes ago it started banging again as he drove of...
Iv fixed it with 12 x 5 inch screws....
Now iv calmed down... Have i gone to far?

LMAO love it.
Answer to the question probably in the eyes of the law but I wouldve done the same.

As crazy as it sounds you have committed a crime and the law will be on their side if they decide to call the cops.

Id like to say theres no witnesses... however you know what todays society is like someone will have seen it and i admitted it on here. He's just came back and tried the gate. i was watching out the window giggling...
then he went in the front door... if it stays screwed shut i might of solved my problem haha

Tbh I'd padlock your gate shut if you did it to mine, or maybe cover it in peanut butter or something less pleasing.

Hope it doesn't turn into a game of gates

My only worry about that is if there was an emergency and the only way out was that side gate, and as others had said if they call the police you could end up with a caution.

Only saying this has I got a caution last year and it stopped me getting a job I was offered as the caution will stay on for life even though it is automatically spent.

Glad you did it though as some folk have no respect and its getting worse.

there is three ways out of his garden, ok ones over a 3 foot high fence but in emergancey you would. as for the police thing not that bothered they need to prove it was me and the house the other side if him have complained.

A caution will only show up on an advanced disclosure surely? If a conviction is spent it won't show up on a standard disclosure.

I can't remember all the time limits, it's been a while since I checked but I do know a few of mine are spent and no longer show up on a disclosure. Plus I'm sure if you explained you got a caution for screwing a gate shut they might find it amusing.

I would have done the same, and in fairness I doubt the law would bother with something so pointless!
