Heart health / weight training etc

My Dad's has recently discovered that he's got problems with his heart. One of the arteries that feeds the right hand side of his heart is 98% blocked. He's okay, off work, waiting for yet more test results but is likely to be having a bypass or a stent put it.

Coincidently, two of my friends parents in the last few months have had similar problems.

My Dad's Mum also had problems with her heart, so it could be hereditary. Or, it might be down to all those years my Dad spent smoking & drinking

Anyway, i've decided to get my colesterol checked out with my GP. Is there any other checks i should do? As a side issue, - how does 'one' go about getting their testosterone levels checked out?

Another question, - I don't do an awful lot of cardio work. My training is mostly with just weights. In terms of looking after your heart, - is weight training any good? Or is endurance cardio what really makes for a healthy heart (forgetting diet for the moment)?

I used to walk into a room full of people & wonder if they liked me..... Now I look around & wonder if I like them

If you are predisposed to heart disease etc the smoking and drinking will not have helped at all. Especially if you are pre-disposed to it.

    Same goes for cancers etc.

Example- My grandad had 7 brothers. He and 6 others drank and smoked ALOT all their lives and they all died at 65-75 years of age. 4 from cancer, but none from heart trouble.

The one who never smoked or drank in his life lived to 93.

No coincidence at all! If you smoke and drink I would knock it on the head.

    Thanks Nigeepoo.

Well, I do not know if I am predisposed or not. I don't smoke and I only binge drink on the odd occasion, - hardly reguarly, - my Dad both smoked and drunk quite often.

So what about weight lifting? Is this beneficial to the heart, or is only cardio type of training good for that?

How do you get your test levels checked?

Go and see your GP for the tests and explain your family history. I believe that they reccomend checking cholesterol etc from the age of 35 in men anyways so you are not far off really.

Personally I think long walks are best for the heart. Humans werent designed to run apparently but to do lots of walking

If you have high bp, then weights may not be too good for the heart.
