Help With Windows Movie Maker , Please !

I'm trying to import some video clips from 'my pictures' folder but windows movie maker says there is no information contained in the files.I used my camera to record the clips if that has any baring but  I can download these clips to youtube no problem but  want to edit them first. Why is WMM not accepting them ? I've used the same program . camera etc on my laptop but my desktop version doesn't want to know.

Sorry if that doesn't make any f*cking sense. This is doing my head in.

Thanks in advance for any help offerd ...in fact I'll add merit points. I have no f*cking idea what they are but people seem to like them

Just to check - if you try and import the same video clips into Movie Maker on your laptop it works ok, but on the desktop it can't?

Are both machines running the same version of Windows, and the same version of Movie Maker (go into MM and click Help - About).

Vista comes with a different version of MM and there are a number of copies and upgrades you can download from the Microsoft Downloads site.

I've had this problem before, turned out the files downloaded off my camera were not compatible with WMM and had to be converted using a video converter.

yes ! but my laptop has died so I cant use it.

I suspect my desktop version of WMM is outdated as it's years old.

So I need to download updates from t'interweb then ?

Thanks for the help so far lads

erm dont knwo what you mean as such but does this help ?

The file C:\Documents and Settings\MARK H\My Documents\My Pictures\18-07-2009\MOV01848.MPG is not valid because it does not contain any information.

.mpg should be fine, as CalderaIIV I suspected they may not me compatible.

What Windows are you using on your desktop?  XP?

Also worth trying to download the Windows Live! Suite as i think that is the latest Movie Maker.

Are you a die hard Movie Maker fan or have you tried any other video editing programs?

Pagan - http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ - If the new version of WMM does not resolve the problem download this. I use it to convert MPG to AVI.

You should be able to do this without having to convert the video. That will work but it'll be sidestepping the problem, and along the way in converting the video it'll give a worse quality output.

If it's for youtube you might not notice the difference but best to solve the problem at the root.

Try not (where possible) to follow the usual "download converter and converter into XZY format" responses - by the time you've got it to Youtube it will have gone through up to 4 different transcodings.  In short in may well end up looking like absolute dog****.

That's what i was trying to get at when talking about solving the reason why the videos won't import instead of just converting them so that they do.

Sorry to hijack a thread, but any ideas as to how to convert Windows Media Audio Voice to something a Mac can play with?

Do you have Roxio or Nero Software on your PC john, usually they come bundled with quite good sound format converters.
