Holiday in Sicily?

Thinking about going next year, looking for ideas now.

Any tips or horror stories?

Went there for 2 weeks in June 1994, so quite a while ago but I still have fond memories.  Stayed in Taormina, an "upmarket" resort that wasn't too touristy.  It's located above the coast, so great views but not ideal for a beach holiday.  Cefalu is on the coast and the other main resort on the island.  Did some day trips and Siracusa and Agrigento were my favourites.  Also went to Catania (where the nearest airport is), Palermo and Mount Etna.  Here are some pics:

Giardini Naxos, the village on the coast below Taormina

    Any reason why Sicily?

Sardinia or Corsica is much nicer in my experience.

Cefalu is nice, I have been there before for a couple of days. What kind of holiday are you looking for?

More to the point you going with your missus, because if shes even half way a looker take a patience pill, she will get eyed up whistled at and even followed, and its no good you blowing your top, its simply a cultural thing you will have to accept.

Not worse than other places in Italy, but I lived there for 3 years and I can tell you it is much much worse than you would be used to in the UK.

Oh right cool where did you live. You’ll know more than me than if you’ve lived there for three years. What were you doing there?

My Dad is from Sicily so I go back there occasionally as we have a lot of family there.

Sorry I need to clarify, I lived near Naples for most of my time there, with a year in the North but visited Sicily twice. IME, this overt leering at women got worse the further south I went (at least unto Rome and then its all the same).

However it was also rife in the North and is a facet of the machismo latin culture that you have to accept or you will go bonkers.

Well this gets even stranger. My mum is from Naples. Never been there myself though. I would have said Naples would be quite bad for this kind of thing.

Just to clarify guys its a family holiday.

The wee one is just about 1 so i reckon she will be ready to travel next year just b4 shes 2.

Done Sardinia for our honeymoon a couple of years ago so fancy somewhere else, just thought that Sicily would be nice.

TBH fancy mainland Italy also but not a city break, more a remote(ish) place where we can drive from to the coast and bigger towns etc. Did this in spain recently and really enjoyed it.

Finally if the wife gets followed/whistled at she would be grateful and it wouldnt really bother me tbh, she aint going to run off as im such a catch!! lol

I live in northern Italy and it doesn't happen at all.

Also lived in Chieti which is on the opposite coast to Rome and again didn't notice it.

You're probably right though, South of Rome or Naples.

Anway, better than in England in some respects... no agro blokes giving it "are you looking at my bird!?".

To the OP: For mainland you could look at Tuscany i.e. Forte de Marmi which would be nice for Florence or Pisa.  Or, even better would be Puglia...  the beaches are lush and it's relatively cheap.  It's where most Italians now go on holiday.

Also... Liguria and the Cinque Terre if you're not that bothered about amazing beaches... have a google on Cinque Terre for photos!  (It's also going to be crazy hot here for the next few weeks, 40°+)
