How accurate/ inaccurate are those handheld bodyfat monitors?

Just out of interest really.  I usually get my B/F measured with calipers and I am approx. 13% atm.

My mate used one of those hand held things, and it said that he was at 12.8%.  Although his arms and legs are relatively lean, he has a bit of a belly and you cant see his abs.

So I am pretty sure I have lower B/F then him...?

What are your views/ thoughts on the hand helds?

I've always been told that the hand held ones are totally useless.

if they're so crap, why do so many PT's actually use them to measure their clients BF?  It's ridiculous.

    Not accurate.

They pass an electrical current through the body then measure the impedance, or opposition to the flow of electricity through the tissues of the body, thus estimating your bodyfat.

Electricity does not go for a jaunt around your body, it takes the pathway of least resistance. Therefore the current will flow up one arm, through the torso, then down the other arm.

Although they are not accurate in giving you the right body fat figure. You can still use then to get a rough baseline, on which you can retest to track progress on a cut.

Tbh though, the mirror/photos should tell you all you need to know.

    Body Weight - 83kg
    Bench - 145kg
    Squat - 190kg
    Clean & Jerk - 129kg
    Snatch - 98kg

Agree with Jack, a tool that you can use to track progress, not particularly accurate but a tool.
    Mirror photos etc.

kingleanThey pass an electrical current through the body then measure the impedance, or opposition to the flow of electricity through the tissues of the body, thus estimating your bodyfat.

That's the "science", but in reality the electrodes do nothing at all.
Think about it. If the BF machine could pass an electrical current through your body, even a tiny one, the health and safety aspects of it would make them highly regulated, yet you can get one in Argos, whether or not you have a heart condition, or a pacemaker, or anything.
Bodyfat monitors "measure" your bodyfat the same way online bodyfat calculators do. They calculate your BF from your height, weight, age and sex. And you tell them that before it does any "measuring".
It measures your weight, that's all.
Pet peeve of mine, can you tell....? :p

Actually thats not even true afaik, they do measure by passing a current through you, i have used the big fancy onces in the gyms etc, the current is tiny, the main issue is that the current wants to follow the path of least resistance, which could technically be anywhere through your body, thats the reasons for the inaccuracy.

Science, man, science. You know, like how it measures your bodyfat?

Obviously a handheld one doesn't weigh you, it gets you you to tell it how much you weigh. And your age, and height, and sex...
A hand held device could just as accurately estimate your waist size from your height, weight, age and sex, and be reasonably accurate most of the time. It's not measuring your waist though, even if it guesses exactly right.
