How advanced do you think our government is?

By this I mean, do you believe in "big brothers always watching" so to speak, like certain authorities keeping a closer eye on us than they should be?

I've heard before that Britain is the most watched nation in the world, by this I mean the most cctv cameras.

Do you believe stuff goes on like in the movie enemy of the state?

What about that Russian spy that was poisoned in London?

They have the technology, but they don't use it / don't know how to use it.

Anyone who walks into a local council office know that it's money over planning half the time - I remember waiting hours in a council run job centre, with 13 people behind desks, and 1 of them actually serving "customers".

The government never really fires people, so without the threat of being kicked out, how are people ever motivated to do a good job?

Promotion based on time in role.
    Sacking based on Union rules.

    Both = sucky performance.

You only have to watch the British to know they're one of the most institutionalised races on the planet.

We que for things because "that's the rules", and we view the europeans who crowd and shout in shops with the deepest suspicion. We grumble about our leaders, but we're one of the few countries to celebrate a FAILED revolution (November 5th). Our armies are some of the worst-paid in the developed world, with some of the cheapest, oldest equipment - yet they're one of the most effective because of the instrinsically instituionalised nature of the Brits. We have a National Health Service that we (by and large) trust sufficiently not to feel the need for medical insurance and our coppers don't carry guns because (with relatively few exceptions) they don't need to as few criminals would dare have a pop at them. Most of us still love our Royals, despite their public shortcomings and totally historical "rights" to their massive wealth and influence. We have a strong sense (on the whole) that we should pay our taxes and let the government sort out the spending, only to have a say every 4 years at an "election" where we get to choose which of 2 candidates drawn from the elite clans well get to be leader for the next 4 years. We put up with taxes that would have a Frenchman reaching for his placard and an American reaching for his gun. And Rory Bremner is the worse retribution our leaders have to worry about - ususally on state-funded (there therefore State-controlled) BBC programs. We actually get the MAJORTY of our news from state-controlled media. Yet we barely notice this and trust them implicitly.

Of course we're being watched. We're one of the few races who's government could get away with it.

There is a damned good reason why the Death Star was full of English people!

Please don't take what I say too literally. I'm a clown, when it's all said and done. Sometimes I say things with my tongue in my cheek to make people laugh, but please rest assured I am not laughing at *you*!

Speaking of November 5th, I really do recommend V for Vendetta to all you fine folk out there.

It hits close to home on a lot of issues.

well we dont HAVE to be a socialist state and pay large taxes but thats what the people of the UK vote for and then spending the entirity of the 4 yrs ruling moaning over.
only in the UK could have a leader that we dont ACTUALLY vote for.
in france the speed cameras, which are here to protect us, get ripped down because they are unfair, parking clamps get cut/burnt/hacksawed off. they didnt join a war on oil (ok because they had a vested interest in america NOT takin over) but at least they did what the people wanted.
every year we get shafted and all we do is bend over further!
only we would send aid around the world to flood victims but still have 1/2 mil people homeless from our own floods.
only in the UK would there be more incentives not to work and a state system so corrupt the good guy can never win. I hope the government do watch us and to more of an extent, read this thread so they can see what a complete hash up they are making of it!

And Rory Bremner is the worse retribution our leaders have to worry about - ususally on state-funded (there therefore State-controlled) BBC programs. We actually get the MAJORTY of our news from state-controlled media. Yet we barely notice this and trust them implicitly.

The Beeb is not state controlled. They fiercely maintain their independence. Even the World Service (which is funded directly from the Foreign Office) retains editorial independence.

And I don't know anyone who believes everything they hear on the news.

how independant can something be when they're kept in jobs soley because of taxation?

you're only independant when you have "**** you" money - i.e. you can tell anyone to get ****ed....and it won't affect you. Non of the TV companies have that, the independants because they take ad money, and the bbc because they take state money.

I think licence money doesnt pass thru Gov hands, more like an independant setup to track the money, as most of the money does not go to the BBC, but on a range of things, mostly in maintanence of the broadcast newrok itself.

and yes, the BBC are free to do what they want, if they do anything otherwise they are all up for a public hearing, I dont think they even ahve to obey watershed times etc, tho they will, you cant say "Sh!t" on the BBC more than twice without there being a public outroar........and by that I mean at least 12 complaints.

"we have the equipment to see if you have a TV license". If they're talking about a database, who the **** would sort through millions of entries?

Boolean searches are quite effective, even when they were used in electrical searches - I even believe your google works under the prinicpals of Boolean - not, and, or

I agree about the TV license, I cant even receive BBC where I live and freeview is not available - I also happen to be out of the line of sight for Sky (how that works with a bloody satellite I dont know ) I feel that I should be able to get a rebate of some description as all I am able to do is listen to the radio, people do realise the license covers the radio as well?

Well, the director of the BBC was put in situe by Tony Blair and the whole channel is funded by tax payers TV licenses.

It's not like Burma TV or anything but it's not as impartial as it should be. Even American Fox news is told how much of the realities of the Iraq occupation it can show, so not to sway public opinion any further against the "war".
