How can bodybuilding be so addictive?

I myself am an addict, but I never understood how can a hobby which is so mentally and physically tough, so much time-consuming, so socially unacceptable, so tough to excel in can turn into an addiction. Leave aside the goodness that comes from a good body, but I know some people who live for this. They keep on bodybuilding despite all the hardships that come in their way inside or outside the gym.

I have had days when I could think nothing else in life except for lifting and rest everything was blank. Now I don't even enjoy normal things of life like I used to. I can't even turn back into life anymore since I have taken bodybuilding so far. Yeah sure it allows me to escape all my problems and is the only answer for any misery that I have faced in my life, but really is that it? Is bodybuilding all I was born for? I enjoy it yes, but what made me take it this far. How can bodybuilding be so addictive? Is their some mind/body science behind it? Has media made it look so cool that it really has become a big thing.

It will be interesting to discuss what makes bodybuilding so addictive or attractive in other sense?

It's not the hobby or the sport as such tho... it centres around how you look, or how you perceive you look.

It's like saying anorexia is 'addictive' it isn't, it's a by product of an obsession. And that's how I see 'BBing' can go for some people. A need/obsession with changing how one looks.

^ just spent ages trying to work out how to merge the 2 threads, gave up and saw you'd deleted your post. Made binning the thread so much easier Cheers

Yes, for some bodybuilding is all about improving their look. But some people don't even care if it improves their look or not and keep on doing it for years.

I was not bodybuilding nonstop for 8 years. I just used that sentence as an example of how supplements can go to waste if there is a gap of a month during bodybuilding.

I consider it addictive but I am not of those guys who like to lift heavy weights or take loads of supplements.

I do bodybuilding, but I am not one of those hardcore bodybuilders who lift heavy weights.

I just lift light-moderate range weights for my lifting capacity.

I've lifted for nigh on 20 years now, competed in drug free competitions - and for me its all about the 'look' and standing out from the norm, as narcisstic as that statement might be perceived.
If I'm brutally honest, I'm not 'addicted' to the training, and could easily give it up tomorrow and pursue another interest.
In reality can there really be that much enjoyment in simply lifting heavy inanimate pieces of iron from A to B only to then be walking around sore for the next day or two? LOL!
If my objectives could be achieved in another way, I'd more than happily switch! :-)

But hey that's my take...and needless to say I'll be in a minority! ;-)

I lift weights mainly for fun and health. Having muscles is a nice side effect. But with that said I don't find training itself that addictive - I can easily not go for a couple of weeks. But then you start feeling like crap, and if you have an extended lay-off the change in your body shape can really mess with your mind. That's what's always brought me back.

It's inbuilt, within our psyche as individuals, a human trait. Whether it's bodybuilding, powerlifting or wanting to keep in general good shape, it's simply what we do.

It's only an addiction like others may have hobbies or interests such as collecting things or making model boats. Everybody has some form of addiction.

Im not sure ive ever had this , although I do like goals

chomp down a moruga scorpion or a dorset naga and that is a real endorphin rush , but I never get any sort of high or satisfaction whilst or straight after training.

Addiction is due to ones personality rather than the actual activity or substance.
People who are obsessive and perfectionists are more prone to addictions.
So the persuit of a "perfect" physical condition is very appealing to an obsessive.
The are also chemical effects due to the physical activity with the Dopamine, Endorphin, Serotonin process.
The action/ reward chemical signalling .

Ignorance: Reassuringly Expensive.
