How far is too far?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/athletics/7243481.stm

Firstly, I'm pretty chuffed with this decision and hope Oscar does the business. Whether it's the right or wrong decision isnt for this thread.

Following the Decision to let Oscar Pistorius compete in the able bodied Olympics discussion broke out on this at work and when I mentioned that if he became unbeatable plenty other athletes would consider having portions of legs amputated people thought the idea utterly ludicrous. Now, for most people the idea is far fetched but the question isnt what you would do, but Would a potential Olympic gold medalist and record holder consider having portions of the legs amputated in order to use similar devices if not doing so meant failing to attain the above?

Absolutely not no, we would then have a bionic olympics.

I think Pistorius is so admirable and he would rather have legs anyday than be a double amputee.

ps no, no one is going to cut their limbs off or people would have already done it to win paraolympics and get fame through that.

    I wouldn't be so sure.

i remember there was some athlete in the 60s- think she competed in decathlon or triathlon- in hindsight it was highly suspected she was actually a man!!

From reading the article, my reaction was that it seems the IAAF have made sure that this won't ever happen

By stating that if and when prosthetics technology advances, they will re-contest the decision, I think they're basically saying that when guys with prosthetics start beating guys without them, they'll be banned from able bodied events. When it can be proven that prosthetics give an advantage, they will be banned. And the ultimate advantage must of course be winning!

Eventually I would imagine that there will come a time when it will be advantageous to have prosthetic limbs in certain sports
