How long can you take ibuprofen for?

Posting on here because there's a lot of good honest advice.

How long can you take ibuprofen for for it to be safe and remain effective? I've bee recommended a two week course of it by a physio before so I know it's atleast two weeks, could I take it for a month and it still be effective and safe or would I get used to the doseage and it stop working?

I'd be taking 2 x 200mg tablets 3x a day for the month. The tablets are the cheap ones from Asda, actually, while I'm on, are the more expensive ones like Anadin worth the extra money?

Cheers. The reason I want to know is that I had a shoulder problem a while back which has stopped me from training, I saw a physio and they've said all I need to do is stretch the pecs and build my upper back muscles but they said that the problem wouldn't go away while the area was inflamed and gave me an injection.

I did the exercises, got rid of the pain in about two weeks, tried heavy pressing again and messed it up badly again. I've left it a few weeks to heal and am gonna start the rehab exercises again but need to get rid of the inflammation while I do.

I would try getting  chiropractor to have a look at you as well mate, could be a neck problem when it comes to shoulders. Try a few weeks of adjustments (where they crack your body back into position). What type of pain have you got in your shoulders?
    A nervey, catching typr pain?
Any reference pain in the bicep, elbow or triceps?
Any tingling or numbness in the wrist or hand?

What could cause this mate? I have this problem with either my upper back, my left shoulder, or possibly my left elbow. Sounds somewhat similar to what you just described there in fact! Tingling and numbness in the hand etc

As for the ibuprofen, I'd just be wary of using it too much because it can cause stomach ulcers if used for prolonged periods. At least take the doses with some milk or something (or an over the counter antacid like ranitidine or similar)

If it is a neck problem causing symptoms in the arm, elbow or hands, it tends to be a nerve root irritation or compression in the cervical spine, you can normally determine which vertebral level by the distribution of symptoms. Could also be a dysfunctional level entirely.

My knowledge of spines is a bit limited at present; Swordfish could probably explain it better than me but I know he hates talking work on here

P.s - Manips are useful but not a solution, you need to address the mechanical (if it is indeed mechanical) problem that's causing the symptoms.

Those symptoms are what I am currently experiencing due to a pinched nerve in my neck vertebrae. It all seems to stem from the neck as painful as the shoulder and biceps tendon is. I have had both an MRI and an ultra sound and both show a completely healthy shoulder.

Its amazing how many times shoulder and back problems are just messages being sent to the brain due to a spinal problem.

the thing is although it is reference pain, if left, you then start adapting to the pain and using your body differently to adjust to it all and create imbalances.

That's what I love about Chiropractors, as long as you give them all the data they need any scan results etc, they really do put the body back to where it should be. I know they are not for everbody though.

Thats the problem with Nerve pinches/ damage, the pain can present itself anywhere along the nerves path.

Tho for the OP, is it a rotator cuff problem?...if the problem muscular, althought Brufen does help with general joint pain, id also be dosing up heavily on the fish oils and Glucosamine etc.

If their is inflamation usually its in the "sleeve" that the nerve sits in, when this gets irretated or pinched it can inflame  and cause the nerve to be sqeesed by the inflammation.

Only one thing to do when taking Brufen, ALWAYS take it with food, can be very hard on the stomache, esp if you plan on taking them for awhile.

It sounds like an impingement problem due to poor posture to me, hunched shoulders = humerus is pulled forward in the shoulder cavity and the structures sitting between the humerus and shoulder (cuff and bicep tendons, bursa) start to get irritated and inflamed.

Certainly can be harsh on the tummy, I always take them within the meal rather than straight after.

Hi mate, would impingement show in a scan?

I'd imagine an MRI would do, doubt an Xray would though, but generally you can clinically diagnose impingement from a physical exam.

Ibuprofen isn't as harsh on the tummy as Diclofenac (Voltarol), there probably isn't a 'maximum' of how long you can take it but agree with above, underlying problem needs addressing. Take it with food ideally.

My right should drops forwards more and I get pain in neck shoulder bicep elbow on that side - I am right handed and spend 10 hours a day in front of computer.

Sometimes if I stretch and get everything aligned right everything stops clicking and hurting but I seem to go back to my old ways - keep meaning to go see a ciro
