How much do you care about protein flavours?

I see a number of companies bringing out exotic flavours of protein and a huge range of flavours and so they must be popular.  Do people really care, as most people I speak to don't as long as it tastes ok and mixes well (and is good value for money)?

Is it a marketing thing where offering flavours creates interest in the brand?

How much are you bothered?

I like to have a selection of flavours to alleviate the boredom, but am more interested in the quality of the whey.
I do find a lot of the flavours to be a bit mild.
So about 6/10 in importance for me.

7, the fact that im consuming a protein shakes daily it's all about the taste.

id rather pay more money for something that tastes great with a good profile.

BSN Syntha 6 tastes amazing but the profile lets it down, amazing with milk. I will trying to make a macdonalds type milkshake with that over xmas holidays.

    I put 7

Ok quality aside as this is purely about taste, (if your not having quality protein you shouldnt even be posting :)

I do just down my protein but having said that I do find new flavours appealing and ive enjoyed flavours that previously wouldn't have interested me.

I do find the traditional flavours a bit boring now although they can be done very well. If I find a good vanilla I love it but its rare.

Another reason the flavours are becoming more popular is that people are using their protein for more than just a PWO shake. Many add to porridge , making flapjacks, adding to yoghurts, all sorts.

Im not fussy in any way I can down anything but as were talking about preferences I also enjoy different flavours at different times of the year . If its hot for instance I like the fruit ones like TPW blueberry for instance goes down a treat.

I love the choice out now and as a consumer I welcome the new flavours.

I think the average guy in the street wants new flavours as well as the new companies that pop up with the same 4 traditional flavours dont get the same buzz about them as the ones bringing out new flavours.

    Urgh McDonald's milkshakes are terrible!

As for the original question - a lot.  If I'm using whey I want it to taste as good as possible, and really what else is there to differentiate products these days (other than cost)?

Used to be a firm 3 and was for years. I do now like a bit of flavouring as I also tend to use it with food and cook with it a bit more now so probably more like a 6 or 7.

We all know what I think lol. I'd also hazard a guess that the variety gets the customers to look but I'd bet the old standards still out sell the new ones

Quality comes first, but nowadays you can find quality along with the taste you enjoy, so I'd rate it pretty highly and as someone else said always nice to have a variety of flavours.

If you love something let it go,if it comes back to you it's yours,if it doesn't it never was.

Flavour is important.  I do this week in, week out, year in, year out.

I don't go to a restaurant and ask for the least flavoursome, cheapest food and the same applies to my every day diet within reason.

I want to enjoy my food, not dread it.

Also, if I have too much of the same flavour too often, I find my body tries to fight it and I gag, even on flavours at first I enjoyed!

    3. Unflavoured.
Cheaper, more natural and while I wouldn't be salivating thinking of my next shake it's no problem to have.

Most of the time I use isolate unflavoured, certain flavours don't agree with my guts and I never know if a new flavour is going to agree with me or not. One of the many reasons I'm keen on trying samples first.

I've tried various brands, flavours and products down the years, and although taste is subjective, I do prefer to have something that tastes pleasant. Although my main criteria is that the product has a good profile and is legit, taste is second.

My primary use for protein powder is post workout, so I do like to have something which taste decent. Although I've had some real rank ones down the years.

As someone has already said, in the past when flavours were more standard, I got to the point where I used to gag when drinking vanilla despite thinking it tasted nice the first few times.

There is so much option out there now it's crazy.

I voted 6.. I'm not too fussed but I do have preferences.. I recently got a tub of vanil**** fuel anabolic only to find out they've changed the flavour, used to be gorgeous, now I find it tasting like play doh! I'll still drink it though.

I'd love to know if changing the flavour name makes much of a difference to sales lol there are loads out there now with names like "super chocolate", "double chocolate", "chocolate perfection", "chocolate cake" which all taste pretty much the same and could just be called "chocolate" and the same for the random dessert named flavours like "Raspberry Ripple" "Cherry Bakewell" etc. which used to just be raspberry and cherry flavours.

Re: How much do you care about protein flavours? 2014/11/19 12:34:26 (permalink)
Tis a funny subject, Some people are hyper anal about the flavours, you would think they were selecting a fine wine or something!  I remember some customers who would insist on a particular flavour, then wait two weeks for us to finally get stock, then a week later they would be trying to sell a tub with two shakes out of it because it doesn't agree with their delicate little palate.

Then at the other end of the spectrum there are the folks that see it for what it is (i.e. Protein) and take whatever represents best value, even if that means unflavoured or a flavour they don't like.

I know recently there seems to an explosion of flavours, This is great, and I do enjoy a Banoffee shake myself, but some of these brands the reason they taste like McDonalds shakes is because they contain a similar amount of sugar,  some have the brass balls to put it on the label, others lie about it, and some make the label hard to understand .... but they needn't bother as a lot of customers just don't care!  Crazy as it sounds I have spelt out to some customers that one brand has 10 grams of sugar in a serving (20g in the double serving they ask for!!)  but they still choose the sugary stuff over quality products given the choice.

Go into McDonalds or even a decent Cafe that serves milkshakes and you usually get a choice from Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla and Banana.  I think if a company can provide these options tasting 'drinkable' then thats good enough for me, no need to go overboard .

Oh, I have to add,  For some strange reason there is something reassuring about the taste of Nutrisport 90+ for me,  it was the only stuff I could get hold of when I started training and even though it has changed formula a few times the underlying taste (or aftertaste perhaps? lol) remains familiar.  Everyone else I know hates the stuff.
Same went for Met-RX MRP's but they taste nothing like the old flavours now.
