A lot of debate about this but generally in the region of 1.5g to 2lb per pounds of bodyweight

Men's Health magazine say that 50g is plenty enough for a normal person, or 150g is right for a body builder looking at gaining mass. They say any more is a waste, and can be harmful.

Personally, I chose to ignore this advice and take about 300-320g a day (on a cut) with a body weight of 186 lbs (1.7g per lb of body weight)

That (and the rest of my diet working wonders)

    Raw dead Lift 320kg
    Raw bench 171kg
    Shirted bench 200kg
    Amateur cage fighter @ 95 - 105kg

    1g per lb of bodyweight

Some go higher some go lower. I personally go to 1.5g per lb.

If you're on gear it should be slightly higher

Well in the end, the amounts depend on you, your lifestyle, and goals.

When I started out 9 years ago all the mags said 1g per lb of lean mass, nowadays its 1.5-2lbs of weight. Back then though whey protein was quite new and expensive so the mags didn't push it as much, milk and egg protein was the common protein and if you tried to consume 100g+ of that in a day you generally suffered. Whey is more affordable now and better on the digestive system compared to milk and egg, so you can guess why the reccomended figure has more than double in a few years!. I certainly dont know of any research that conclusivly proves more is better.
