How to perform DB shrugs?

Hey there, i perform DB shrugs as shown on the link.....DB SHRUGS. However at the gym ive seen people doing it making a circular motion with their shoulders. Whats the difference?

Another question, bit off topic like. Ive started using free weights instead of machine. I seem well unstable when i lift and carnt lift as much as machine. This usual when first staring out free weights?

    Shrugs are straight up and down mate,the people in your gym are doing it wrong.Perfectly normal to feel a bit unstable with free weights when you're a beginner.Keep the weights light until you get the form mastered and then bring the weights up.You'll soon start to feel more stable and more confident with your form.Machines tend to keep the movement in a straight line so you only have to concentrate on the muscle being trained.With free weights you have to use other muscles to stabilise yourself.Free weights are generally regarded as being more productive for this reason.
