Huge 8.9 earthquake just hit Japan

A massive earthquake has just hit Japan's northeastern coast ... The biggest tremor was around 8.9. To put this is some sort of context, the Haiti earthquake was a 7.0.

I've just been watching some live footage now... Huge waves, watching people in cars literally trying to outrun waves is a sight to behold. Trucks being washed away like a leaf.

http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish  (live)

Seems to be calming down now. There is around 29 people reported dead so far, many missing, so likely to rise. Japan are very well prepared for these events, everything seems well organised, so i guess there is no one better than them to deal with this.

Tsunami warnings issued in 53 countries and territories in the pacific Ocean

NZ will get hit in 12 hours and Hawaii in about 6 1/2.

Thank you for posting that. I have a lot of family (all my inlaws) over there. I probably wouldn't have seen the news today otherwise, so thank you very much! Better make a few calls before I go to work!

They should be ok as they are in Osaka which is further south.

    Cheers.

The latest reports claim an imminent earthquake. No idea about the size of this one though.

The wave is now as high as a lot of pacific islands (higher than some), hopefully it loses energy as it moves along. Looks like there will be some big tides on the west coast USA.

Mother earth flexes her muscles again. We dont know how lucky we are where we live that we dont have to deal with these kind of natural events.

Unfortunately it's more like 1,000x. Each integer move up the Richter scale is roughly 32x more powerful than the last.

I was there a couple of months back, lucky I missed that one.

Like you say, I bet they are ready for this and will deal with it as best they can.

I thought it was to the power of 10 per point, due to it being worked on the base-10 logarithmic scale - So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0.

Bet the insurance policies are still cheaper than ours mind!

I cant believe how scary it must be, the mini earthquake we had in 2008 scared the crap out of me

The Richter magnitude scale, also known as the local magnitude (MLscale, assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude (shaking amplitude) of the largest displacement from zero on a particular type of seismometer (Wood–Anderson torsion). So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0

Some pretty scary footage - town flooding with cars trying to get out of way, not good. There's gonna be a lot of loss of life here.

    Awful stuff
