Hypnotherapy...
K I work in a gym, and yesterday had a chap enter, said the usual hello how you doing business, when he asked me for some advice. We got talking, and we got onto what his day job is, and he is a hypnotist. When asked what sort of field he is in, he does both comedy shows as well as serious one on ones for things like phobis/smoking etc etc. I asked him what his fees were, and he is charging an average of £95 for a one to one session to cure phobias etc etc. I let him know im a bit sceptical, not about hypnosis itself, as i believe in that, but about whether I personally could be hypnotised, I seriously dont think I could be, and he assured me he can hypnotise anybody, some people within a minute! I laughed, so he offered to hypnotise me there and then for free to cure my phobia of spiders, I declined hahaha. Now, I havent ruled it out, but, part of me thinks, when I come too, if he can change something in my psyche so easily, is he changing me as a person? I mean, im scared of spiders for a reason obviously, and id liek to think that it cant just be changed in 10 minutes! Anyway, he is coming in to see me at 2pm today, I have agreed to get him on the right track regarding his weight loss etc etc as he is quite an interesting person to speak to, but the thing is, im paranoid about looking at his bloody eyes!!!! Any slight movement he made yesterday I was thinking "is he trying to put me under" prob silly i know, and no doubt against his code of ethics come to think of it, but just couldnt relax around him haha. Anybody been hypnotised? Am I being a wuss? If he hypnotises me will i wake up the same lol!!!!

Professional hypnotherapy may be a load of bogus old claptrap. However, be that as it may, professional hypnotherapists: a) have nothing to do with stage-acts, b) will not offer to hypnotise you on the spot. Do not give this man any money under any circumstances.

Agree with John here. Properly 'hypnotising' somebody requires a lot more that swinging a pocket watch and talking.

They can't hypnotise you just by looking into your eyes in a certain way. It's a process that you have to be a willing participant in (some might say the whole thing is just a self-delusion) I have seen phobias cured quickly on TV shows and it seemed genuine. I can believe it could be possible because a phobia is just an irrational thought process so I can see that if you can get the person to think in a different way the phobia could vanish. I myself had a spider phobia half-day course at London Zoo and, while I wasn't totally cured, by the end of 3 hours I held a tarantula and let a big black house spider run over my fingers which is something I could not have done before.

JohnKerr2 Like many alternative therapies it works if you believe it's going to work. I wish that were true. I had several sessions trying to 'cure' my social anxiety which I desperately hoped would work. The only result was I had £160 less in my wallet and several half hour sessions where I had some really good afternoon naps.

OK, then we can say that belief it is going to work is a necessary but not sufficient condition. So we can re-phrase John's statement as 'Like many alternative therapies it can only work if you believe it's going to work'

^^ That was totally bizaare. One of the weirdest things i've seen in a while. The one lad on the right was clearly on MDMA or something, who the hell rolls their head like that? Wonder how he found being 'hypnotised' on pills lol. Personally this guy looks very dodgy; wouldn't let him anywhere near me tbh.
