INSOMNIA!! Any tips on combating it...?

Haven't been sleeping well for the past week or so and now feel like total and utter sh*te. Kitty suggested it was because I was taking stimulants too late - I don't THINK I've been doing so (I'm usually fairly good about NOT consuming anything stimulating after about 6pm), so that just leaves the location of my current 'home'.

I'm in a B&B behind Lime Street Station, just up from the Carling Academy, and there are a couple of well-patronised hostelries just round the corner. It's especially noisy on Friday and Saturday nights - especially when either team - or both (well miracles DO happen!) have won.

I've tried most of the herbal sleep aids (Kalms Sleep, Herbal Nytol, etc) and Valerian Plus tea. Not working. I DO NOT, if it can possibly be helped, want to go back down the benzodiazipine route (most GPs are reluctant to prescribe them these days as they are too easy to OD on (especially when you're dealing with someone with a long history of OD'ing on BDs - such as myself.) and can be addictive.)

Baths are out, because I don't have access to one, so is there anything else I can do to try and get a decent night's sleep? Could get some earplugs, I s'pose, but anything else? I have asked to move to a quieter room, but the hotel's full at the moment.

You lot have been VERY accepting, friendly and supportive, and I feel more positive about getting the diet licked now - but I DO need sleep. Can't exercise when I feel like all I want to do is crawl into a hole and die!

Cheers m'dears!

Your gp might give you zopiclone - its quite effective as a sleeper, and very difficult to OD on (you'd prob fall asleep before you had time to eat enough of them!)

avoid taking any stimulants at all at any time of the day- this is a pretty obvious way of eliminating it as a poss cause

Is there anything on your mind? because i suffered with insomnia for months and the way i combated it would be to really relax an hour before bed and just before bed write down everything i had to do tomorrow and and solutions to any problems, this helped alot.

A broke clock still tells the time twice a day.

Earplugs.  I wear them every night and have done for years. Live about 5sec walk from a pub at the end of the road (never go in there mind) but at closing time all the drunk buffoons come spilling out and can get really noisy.

Have you tried diphenhydramine (non-herbal Nytol), not the best drug but it works for a while.

GP probably won't give you a Z-drug (zopiclone, zolpidem) because you live in a noisy area, as it's not an acceptable long-term solution, they're not as bad as benzos but still have addictive/dependency potential.

Sooooooo, is it insomnia or just being kept awake because of the noise. In other posts you imply it's the noise so we shouldn't be discussing medication!

Caffeine will keep you more alert whether noisy or not so drop the stimulants completely as suggested and see if that helps a little. If you go back on them then as I suggested before, do not take after midday!

I had terrible insomnia for months, I don't know if its relevant but mine was caused by a cessation of my alcohol abuse, basically after several years of always being pissed when I went to bed it took months for my body to get used to sober sleep.

Anyway, take the tips, DON'T WORRY, and it will usually resolve over time.

A few days on Zop and you will be dependant on it to sleep though.

Might be useful as a short term measure though.

I thought the standard MT prescription in such cases was to C.O.O.

I have been given zopiclone by my GP as i was having trouble getting to sleep and then staying asleep. I did find it to be powerful, but i still had to work at winding down to get the full affect.

I was also advised to only use it a day or two a week as it's only really intended for sporadic use and not to be relied upon.

Awesome pic, but Tony you're not doing yourself many favours posting up tips on preventing the gag reflex and then a picture of a guy touching his toes - Ak

ive had problems sleeping for a couple of months, maybe getting 4 hours a night, thing is on weekend i have no problem, its just when i know ive got to be up for work in the morning that i just cant get off..

however for getting a better quality sleep ive tried ZMA before bed and once i nod off  i dont seem to wake up.. i think my problem is that i work out at 9 pm as im at work till 7 most nights so i take a stimulant like red bull superpump etc around that time lol!

Sorry I've only just seen this thread again - life's got in the way again. Zopiclone is a benzodiazapine (same as diazepam, lorazepam, temazepam - and anything else ending in 'pam' basically.).

It does annoy me because it's only for a small minority they prove addictive - but they're also pretty lethal in OD (especially when combined with alcohol) - think I've been EXTREMELY lucky, I've walked away from 3 benzo ODs (with JD's, Southern Comfort and Smirnoff) and lived to tell about it. To all intents and purposes, I shouldn't be here - just call me The Cat.

Zopiclone is, however, FAR less lethal than the 'pams' (diazepam being the worst of those (but it's still the most commonly prescribed)).

Thanks (who knows, my new GP might be the understanding type.)

P.S. Forgive the medical mumbo-jumbo. I carry a copy of the BNF (British National Formulary) with me wherever I go, so I know all about the side-effects and toxicity of most PoM and OtC drugs. The BNF is the standard text used by all prescribing medical bods.
