Internet speed?

Hi guys,

Not being much of a computer wizz myself How do I find out my internet speed?

I have just bought a wireless router, but haven't got an adpater so I can't use it wirelessy yet. With my old modem I could see an icon which told me how fast it was.

I get around 3mb normally, it's supposed to be up to 8mb on AOL.

Also will it be slower when wirless, my modem will be 10 meters away from the phone socket btw.

Cheers John.

It wont be slower and 3mb is quite a good speed to be honest. Im on sky unlimited and get about 3mb. 3mb is what most peoples current phone lines can handle. But BT will be implementing their next generation network soon so speeds will get quicker then.

Shouldnt make a difference to ur modem speed what type of cable/connection you use.
The cable simply dictates the speed at which your Pc can access the router/modem.
Using Ethernet you can get up to 100mb/s using wireless 54mb/s ( normally around 20).

Your internet speed will be affected as more people in your area use the connection

I am using the Ethernet cable which it came with. Under some settings thing in my connections it says 100mb but thats not what I am getting lol.

Will it improve when I go wireless with the adapter?

wireless is worse than being wired so no it shouldnt improve. The 100mb is the data rate that the cable can handle not what your connection is.

So if you have an 8mb connection the cable will transfer 8mb of conection to ur pc.
    * edit - your PC will show a 100mb connection because thats what it can achieve when wired.

    Right ok.

I should be getting up to 8mb on AOL with the old modem I got 3.2 normally but sometimes it went up to 4mb or more then a day or so later went back to 3.2 or so.

    Why is this mate?

So may be it's AOL why it's only 2.2 at the mo it might improve in a day or so.

So when it's wireless do you think it will be slower?

    Cheers again mate.

    John.

The wireless wont affect your internet speed whatsoever.

    there are two connections here:

    1. The connection between your PC and the Router (fast!)
    2. The connection between your house and the phone exchange (not so fast)

Internet speed is dependant on loads of variables from the wiring in your home or even if there are cars driving on a road where copper cable is laid!

Best ways to boost your internet speed:

    1. Get a cable (virgin) connection
    2. Phone BT and ask for a line check
    3. If you like DIY, sort out the phone wiring in your house
    4. Switch to an ISP that supports ADSL2+
    5. Ensure that you have microfilters installed on ALL phone extensions in the house
    6. Prey to the broadband gods.
    7. Move to a house nearer the phone exchange

Not sure why your speed is up and down, could be more people are signing up to AOL in your area. Could be that because AOL will use the BT exchange at some point its getting slowed at their end- (BT are currently installed their 21CN network so undoubtebly gona slow service somewhere)

You connection wont change with wireless, you'll stil lget the same speed. But you wont connect to the router itself as 'fast' as you did with wired.
This shouldnt cause you a problem unless you D/l massive amounts of data. for just normal browsing and d/l songs you wont notice the difference.

its very rare that people get thier quoted speeds from their provider unless their within 100m of the exchange.

*EDIt- think sub's summed it up there,

LOL at number 6 it just might work.

Well my main question really is why has it gone from 3mb to 2mb because I have changed from using a BT Voyager 105 wired modem to a Netgear wireless-G modem? (Not wireless yet)

Is this just coinsurance as AOL and how many people are online or something else I don't get that part

    Cheers again people.

i cant realy rembr here so i might be wrong ( mebes sub will know)
but each person is individaully connected to the exchange in their street (copper cabling used) then from there they are all bound together and connected to the main exchange( might be fiber might be copper still)- fiber being the preffered option as its faster). I think they share the same trunking meaning your speed will be dependant on the amount of local users.

but in all honesty i have no clue theres jsut so many factors that can affect your connection.
