Is Huel Healthy?

Is this a fair review? I use Huel occasionally myself.

I do a lot of push ups and sit ups. And I drink plenty of milk.

as part of a controlled diet I think its awesome , wouldn't replace every meal with it as it doesn't fit my macro's , but coming out of a prep diet , i find myself more energetic , better digestion, less bloating , more regular , quite filling. Ive been having it at least 2-3 times per day and yes I feel a lot better ( than i did pre contest)  makes some good recipes and is very convenient.

I think this review is along the lines of eating only huel/soylent.  Gets a thumbs up for me  ( I always thought it was 4 square meals per day not 3 i.e. a square)

How many meals do you have a day?

When I do have it I tend to have it once a day at around 80g-125g, I do this if I am feeling lazy or if I cba to come up with something else to have. probably around 4/5 times a week.

You say it makes you feel better, what do you have it instead of to make yourself feel better?

Depends what you mean by healthy, if you mean as a supplement then from what I know about it yes as it contains "healthy" nutritious ingredients.

If you mean is it healthy to solely live on then I'd say no (personally) although it's probably a damn sight better than most people's diets lol.

I generally prefer "traditional" meals and have the time and knowledge to ensure I prep my meals so that I get a good variety of wholefoods.

But imo in the context of a "supplement" yes its healthy.

I think this guy kind of misses the point somewhat?  If Mr Know-it-all could point to a single source that is better, then he might have a point, but to conclude that real food is better, is kind of a "no **** Sherlock" moment.

Wouldn’t imagine so. Its intended as a meal when making real food isn’t an option surely? On the move, in a hurry etc. Too carby for me though

I have been having it for breakfast 80 grams with a scoop of added  protein powder , for supper i mix a scoop and half with eggs and make pancakes .  I also have a couple of scoops with a scoop of protein with me at all times incase i work late/run out of meals , so mainly twice per day but sometimes 3.

I would consider it a food though rather than a supplement , more of a meal replacement , and as an MRP its probably the most healthy one I can find  I think of, if the majority of the population switched to huel , people would be a lot healthier , just through getting more fibre and not eating junk.

As for making me feel better , coming out of a long contest phase , I am having it instead of nothing/air/dust, so just introducing more carbohydrates and the protein it contains replaces some chicken/fish/beef/quorn. Usually coming out of a contest phase I would eat a lot of junk and be constant overeating/binging , huel has definatley helped with this as its very filling , especially if I have it early evening.

Do you find having it early evening gives you a really full feeling until bed?

I personally find that it does. but that depends on when you go to bed I guess.

Will be starting my use from this week, pretty excited I've got the berry flavour. Will be keeping a log as well, got a well known strength coach on board as well designing me a program.

Don't have another BJJ tournament until Feb next year so give me a decent 3 month ish run to see what happens.

Here's what I wrote in the topic about this on the Huel forum:

He’s incorrect on so many points:
    •     MCTs - Huel is low lauric and high capric and caprylic acid
    •     Huel has a GI of 27 - so his oats being digested quickly comment is moot
    •     Defending Soylent here: he’s incorrect on isomaltulose which is not a sugar; it’s a low GI polysaccharide
    •     Leucine - I couldn’t disagree with him more. You need a reasonable amount of leucine per meal to activate the mTor enzyme to kick start protein synthesis. Inadequate leucine relative to carb intake, is one of the reasons contributing to obesity
    •     If he thinks we’re trying to appeat to keto diet, he doesn’t know what a keto diet is!
    •     Not sure of the relevance to slating added vitamin A to either Huel or Soylent

It’s a shame he didn’t spend an hour or so more checking out some facts before making the video.

Berry flavour tastes great, a tiny bit earthy but I do not mind it.

James - for the people who are just using Huel, is there 'anything missing' from their diet?

Comments on the video within youtube are typical cult member nods of agreement. One guy says using a blender "destroys nutrients" is there anything in this?

No, and I have no idea what they mean. Hey, the guy just solved the global obesity epidemic! Just blend everything and have as much as you want!

I know of quite a number of people consuming 100% Huel. Indeed, we're running a study at the moment with several people on 100% for a month. Report due early Jan.

I believe that has something to do with the food/nutrients being absorbed too quickly and not making it to the small intestines therefor not allowing the good bacteria to feed of it as much. Thats what I heard anyway. I still have a blended smoothie every day though.

I do a lot of push ups and sit ups. And I drink plenty of milk.
