Is it me or is weight training more popular than ever?

I wont call it body building as it opens up a can of worms and will end in tears. But anyway, I was in this themed restaurant in S Wales on the weekend (Frankie & Bennies - Treforest in case your from that area), and the amount of guys who were obviously training was incredible.

I would say at least 7 or 8 guys there were either just starting out or were proper ripped, big etc. I know there will be a chance of this happening in a fairly busy food place but it surprised me anyway. And generally on the streets I see so many guys who train it must be a virtual fashion now.

They say we are becoming an obese nation but I think we may be turning into something like the US where there is a sizable section of the population who like to train and keep fit.

(BTW the guy I was sitting near obviously trained and he left his fries at the side of his plate - made me smile)

Yes, especially in the UK. To be honest, and i know this will seem like such a sweeping statement. But its simply an opinion, in many parts of the UK, i think many people feel that to get any sort of respect you have to be 'big'. And to an extent, its quite true. I think this is a major factor in the increase of use in steroids in the UK and the rise in popularity for bodybuilding.
Its odd that in parts of Europe, bodybuilders are quite a commodity and they do attract a fair bit of attention! In the UK were just seen as a bunch of ecocentric monkeys, i think it comes down to supply and demand. As we are many in the UK, were just seen as a somewhat outcast part of the community.

Can't say I have noticed in the "real world"

But in the Gym enviroment I beleive the opposite to be sort of true - ATM I see absolutely loads of guys using the gym , and getting virtually no results - whereas in the "Good ol' days " , Virtually EVERYONE who came through the door either got results or dropped out

I put it down to the fact that in those days , going to the gym was a pretty serious step , and not something that was taken lightly - if you didn't want impressive results , then you simply wouldn't waste your time going !

Whereas these days going to the gym isn't such a big deal , Guys are seemingly happy to go and put a half asssed effort in

Lazy is a word used by the obsessed, to describe those with a life.

That was just what i was going to bring up, a hell of a lot of people now regulary visit gyms and imo its just progressed from there. When you go the gym to try and get fit/lose weight you cant help but look at the weights section and start thinking what if? How could i look if in a few years if i did.....

    Oooh 1 post to go.

Guessing, can usually tell from their clothing. They could be just natural or like me are part-timers.

Its a small bit more popular in Ireland, not massive although its certainly growing imo, but there are way more bodybuilders around because of the Eastern Europeans.
You can often find a big Irish guy, but rarely a big and LEAN guy like a lot of the EE are.

    1. i'm not surprised in treforest. my perception is that the s.wales valleys have unusually high numbers bodybuilding and using steroids.

    2. but i also agree that it's growing out more into general society. last night i saw an advert for whey protein on network television. i hardly ever see the television, so this may have become commonplace for all i know, but i was extremely surprised. even 5 years ago unthinkable.

still unusual, your restaurant experience, though. i live in birmingham and london, and i'm not that big but it's still pretty unusual in any bar or restaurant i go to that i'm not the biggest (muscle wise: there's always plenty heavier, and taller).

Its beause in the valleys they have 3 choices:
    1. Weight train
    2. Play rugby
    3. Join a band
That seems what all people do there.

i can't believe you missed out drinking, shagging and fighting (though i suppose at least 2 of those are included in rubgy).

(i'm allowed to say that, btw, because i used to be local; but coming from cardiff, you're taking your life in your hands).

I'd have to disagree here in Glasgow, the majoirty of guys want to look like Pete Docherty or Rusell Brand with the tight boot leg black jeans and scruffy hair! They are size zero and about 7 stone wet!

There are a lot more in Cardiff and the valleys. A lot of big lads go down the football on a Saturday. A lot of steroid use and to be honest it is pretty mad in Cardiff on a night out. That is one of the reasons I am staying big strong and sober!

    Ive noticed this too.

Quite a few when I go into a town. Perhaps its because you train, when you look at a dude, you size him up in about a tenth of a second as to whether he trains or not, if he looks like he doesnt, the thought doesnt go further where as if he looks like he does, youd think more about and just think, oh, he goes gym and thats that.

Hazard a touch of narcissism without shame.
