Is my heart rate high-189bpm

I did some cardio on monday for the first time in ages, and I intend to keep it up as I wanna impove my overall fitness. Did the following:

Rowing (on the highest setting): 1.5km in 6 mins
Running: 1.5km in 6 mins
Cycling (on level 8 of 12 and averaging 85rpm): 15 mins

I'm only 27 and weigh 72kg, so I was surprised to find that by the time I'd finished cycling my heart rate was 189bpm. Admittedly I waws sweating quite a bit but at no time did I feel like I was killing myself. Surely this is very high. If I'd gone flat out what may it have been. Cheers in advance.

Check out the post on "Can someone explain heart rate"
I'd say that at 189 bpm you were probably slightly over cooking it

Always do this calculation 220 - your age x 75% for fat burn or x 85% for cardio vascular fitness.
I wouldn't advise you to go much over 90% of your max heart rate for extended periods of times.

90% of your max for you is about 173.8 so lets say 174 bpm

But the above are very general rules aren't they. My theoretical max is 193, but at 189 if felt reasonably ok. What is mean is that at that pace I didn't feel distressed, dizzy, seriously short of breath or anything like that. So how about this, after a few more weeks cardio I'll put it to the test and go absolutely flat out just to see what my max really is. Ooops, almost forgot the other day I got up to 191!!!! My gyms running a triathalon in April and I wanna enter. It looks like this:

    Row 1500m level 5
    Run 2000m flat
    Cycle 6000m level 3 out of 12

I agree tuffnutt. I'm a fitness instructor and regularly instruct advance Spin Indoor Cycle Classes. During sprints and high intensity stuff my heart rate is up to 190 too. Rules are made to be broken sometimes. As long as you feel ok, I don't think it does too much harm providing you are fit and well. Your triathalon looks cool. Have fun!

As said above, the rule of thumb for traininh HR is.

    220BPM - AGE (27) = 193

Your max (100%) hr is 193, for fat burn you should working at a constant intensity of between 65%-75% of this, for cardio training up the intensity by approx 20%.

Where did you get the measurement from?

They are only guidelines because in my mid 20s I was curious to see how high I could get my heart rate and I did manage 220 - 55 beats in 15 seconds!

As with everything like this, these are guidelines, and differ according to body and type. I too have been able to push my BPM higher than calculated but I would not recoment it as a matter of course.

Yep, 220-age is just a rough guide. Many people will have Max HR well in excess of this. If you say you felt OK then there is nothing wrong with taking your heart rate that high, you will be getting some excellent cardiovascualr fitness benefits from it.
