I feel like a kid approaching Christmas at moment...

Very excited but laser focused! Visualising the lifts I will be making and counting down now until game day. The hard thing has been just the one weights sesh this week - being in the gym and doing yoga/stretching/mobility just is weird but all required to save and build energy/get body in peak condition.

Today - 20 mins yoga, foam rolling legs, lats and spinal rolls. Lower back stretch/mobility.

BW today 84.3kg. Not much put on since the illness but physically in a much better condition now I have had a couple of weeks eating normally.

Catch you all Monday with updates and hopefully some good vids.

Soooooo…… 1st Comp Done. I can now say i'm a Powerlifter.

Was a fantastic day and lots learnt from it. Total of 432.5kg for the day - lower then my initial aim of around 510kg but knee injury and sickness played their part in this. Total of 520kg would qualify for nationals. Finished 6th out of 9 so lots of incentive to work hard on a good off season and come back stronger for next one. Full results out in a day or 2 so will see what winning total was.

BW on the day 83.6kg. Very much down on where I should be but still gaining back on what I lost due to sickness. 1.1kg lower and I would of been in a lower weight class - on the day was the lightest in my weight class.

Food wise on the day will add a few bits as well that I could see other lifters eating rice pudding and jellt which I would of added to my home made flapjacks, salted ricecakes, otcakes and bananas. So good learning curve on that. Would of added some Lucozade or energy drinks to sip as well as wa sjust drinking coffee/water and energy dipped after bench so bought a monster to perk me up for deads - tbh I don't think I needed it as I was fired up for deads.

Warming up will approach differently in regards to squat/bench next time - as squat was light wasn't too much I could do to warm up so lots of BW movement and mobility. Bench on reflection I could of added another warmup set, my setup also wasn't as tight as I would of liked on the day but that's another little learning curve and something to work on in off season. Deadlift warmup was perfect and done exactly what I needed to do and adrenaline did the rest.

I think I was the only lifter not wearing a singlet and also one of the few who was not an SBD whore!

So the days lifts...

Squat - 9 white lights
1. 60kg
2. 80kg
3. 120kg

Knee was holding up fine and felt like I was still warming up so an easy 120kg just topped my total up without a risk of injuring myself.

Bench - 6 white lights
1. 90kg
2. 100kg
3. 107.5kg FAIL

As mentioned above I would of liked a tighter setup. First 2 moved well enough, 3rd lift caught at sticking point and couldn't push through. Was gutted and took myself away for 20 mins to compose myself and start focusing on deads.

Deadlift - 9 white lights
1. 180kg
2. 200kg
3. 212.5kg PB

Ended on a high. First 2 lifts moved easily. Took my time deciding on last lift and toyed with the idea of a 220kg lift but with peaking disruption sensible head decided 212.5kg as this would be a PB and still progress. Wack of smelling salts before and adrenaline surging. Lift honestly moved quicked then my 210kg lift over xmas. Was hard work but felt a very smooth lift and could feel whole body working for it. Potentially had another 2.5kg-5kg there but massively happy to end on a high note. No videos sadly of deads as my dad had to leave after deads and was just focusing on lifting rather then worrying about someone filming my lifts.

Was utterly exhausted last night so had a good meal and in bed by 9. Couldn't even be bothered having a beer. Had a tea and that was it for me.

All things considered very happy with how the day went - I think there is a lot of room for improvement which is very encouraging and looking forward to a good off season with Ox to push me on further. Hoping to also change 1 gym session to an evening one once per week so I can train in a strength gym once per week and also that session can be longer.

Ox has done be proud in the run up adjusting plan and giving advice as need be with the injury/sickness and having him there to sort training for me so I can just focus on lifting was a massive help.

Days rest today and a beer with work at lunch and de-load starts tomorrow.

Opener of Squat & all bench vids below. Next time wife will be there so all lifts will be filmed...

Squat opener

Bench Opener

Bench 2nd lift

Bench 3rd lift

Yes mate! I was thinking about your meet yesterday actually getting excited about hearing the results lol. Great work man.

Considering your injury and illness you've played a very good game, not letting it get you down which is something I know I'll be a sucker for when my time comes. Good decision regarding the squat weights, you know there was more there but you don't want to risk injury at your first meet. Shame about the bench fail but still a good effort, listening to the queues from the ref must be a skill in itself. And good work on the deadlift PB, definitely a 215-220 in you but there's no point in pushing it on your first meet, shame there's no video though lol. And 6th out of 9 is a good result, for my first ever meet I'll be expecting to come bottom so mid-table is all good!

I'm well jealous you can call yourself a powerlifter now, I can't wait to be able to use that title lol. Did you get some good conversation out of the other lifters? Was there many other first timers there?

Also well done Ox, I've already decided that when I get myself booked onto a meet I'll be choosing you as my prep/peaking coach.

Well done buddy. A great effort considering your run up to the comp.

9 thumbs up for the squat must be a real pleaser even if the weight wasn't at its max.

Nice work mate! I particularly like the fact you kept your head on and went for an achievable dead PB. Well done!

Were you very nervous? Or did you zone in? Can’t see it on the vids.

haha cheers mate!

TBH the injuries didn't affect my mentality at all - I was always focused and ready to compete no matter what happened in the prep. Squats had to be sensible - was not worth aggravating my knee and potentially ruining the day for me. Bench was a shame but I think better setup and warmup next time with uniterrupted prep and more is there. Just wasn't to be on the day. Deadlift was awesome mate - I just wanted a PB attempt and with the injury/sickness no point being a hero and going massively over my PB.

Yep its cool being able to call myself powerlifter now. Quite a few first timers there actually with very experienced competitor so good mix of people there. Few records broker as well. Yeh good convo with the first timers all in same boat.

Cant go wrong with ox mate. Great coach.

Thanks mate was a very long day but great experience and cant wait for next one!

Squat I was chilled as knew they were easy, bench I was excited for and deads I was massively dead focused and drilled in to what I was lifting. Need to get that deadlift internal aggression mindset when approaching next next comp. Will have that for squats as well.
