Job interview – refused a holiday day by boss.

I’ve not been enjoying my job for a while now and the only reason I stayed was because i kept being told it’s easier to find a job when you already have one…

Well I’ve found a new job, been invited along to the interview so have put a holiday request form in, however my boss has knocked me back for having the day off as the other bloke I work alongside has already got that day off, I’ve given 3 weeks notice which I think is a fair amount of time.

So now I need a reason that I must have the day off, part of me wants to say it’s for a job interview, but that’s just me being bitter.

So any ideas? Bearing in mind it’s 3 weeks away and as there’s only 2 of us that do my job, it needs to be a really good reason to leave him short.

not going to the job interview is not an option, obviously!

Yeap, I'd say hospital appointment that you have been waiting 3 months for or more - if he enquires as to what it is you can always say x rays or something for a back or if you are feeling rather more pedantic, answer that you'd prefer not to say as it is personal.

why dont you ask can they rearrange the job interview?

I know its not ideal but ime recruiters are generally understanding about these things, explain the situation and they might arrange it for the next day

    failing that ring in sick

it's more of an assessment day with interview, so it cant be re-arranged.

as for doctors appointment, he would just ask me to come in and work and then go for appointment and come back after which wouldnt be easy as the assessment day/interview is planned to last all day and it's in london, i live in yorkshire!

i need something that gets me the whole day off.

Start sneezing and coughing the day before, complain of a sore throat. Very good chance he will send you home

Thing is, pulling a sicky on a day you requested a holiday for looks about as dodgy as it gets.

You did gain far too much fat though,I mean, you're not muscular at all, you're just a fat mess.

Do you drive/commute to work?  Ring in late and say you have broken down - waiting for a tow truck to pick you up, not sure what time you'll be in if at all?  Just a thought.  Borrow a mates car for the rest of the week, so as to not look too suspect.

I know it's naughty, but you should have said nothing at all and then just ring in sick on the day.  Will look suspish if you do that now.

I would say that you originally requested the day's leave because of your hospital appointment.

You have since (after your leave request was declined) contacted the hospital who have informed you that they cannot offer an alternatively appointment for many months.

The appointment is too important to miss, - so regrettably, you will be having the day off.

Having typed that, I am now wondering if they'll ask for proof of the appointment...?

    ok, just to re-cap...

    * if i say its for a doctors/dentist/hospital appointment he'll give me the time off, but expect me to go in at some point during the day, this is not possible, the interivew is over 200 miles away.

*i've already handed a holiday request in, if i phone in sick it just wont wash, basically i cant phone in sick now, i need a valid reason to have the full day off

    * i've had my probation extended by 3 months, due to being off sick twice in the first 6 months, i'm on thin ice, but want to leave anyway.

    any viable idea?

Have a chat with your collegue to see if he will change his leave day.  Explain the situation.  He might just be one of the good guys!

Call the people having the interview and say"Im very pleased to have an interview, however the date we arranged conflicts with my current employment,i dont wish to let down my employer on any front,so i was wondering if there is the slimiest chance i may reschedule the day please?"show them your up front and that you vaule you your current employer and you think and work with respect

even if its the day after or before the other date,if you cant get it off ,then go sick at least its not the same day,if your scared of loosing your job for the day off offer to work the weekend free to make up,income is paramount over everything

Have you told work mates you got something lined up? maybe some ones mentioned it too the gaffer
keep stum for a bit imo
    good luck

Everyone has been in shape, but not everyone is IN shape, its about where your going not where you have been.

the bloke i work with is on holiday for the week, so thats a no go.

the assessment day cant be changed.

i need a reason to have the full day off that isn't a doctors/dentist/hospital appointment.

right the way i see it now is that you have 2 options:

    1) go to the assessment day and piss off your current boss a you're leaving him in the lurch

    2) don't go to the assessment day and cut your hand off in relation to getting a new job

your choice which is more important to you

Could you not ask your work collegue to come in?  Is he doing something really important?  I know I would do it for any of my work mates if I could.
