Knuckle cracking

does it cause arthritus?

i dont think it does, but all my evidence comes from a kitkak advert. my co-workers and family say it does, cuase it happened to great unkle ect ( and they all smoke thats soooo much better!)

and if you do crack your knuckles do you realise your doing it?

    from a random site:

Now we get to the interesting papers. [2] looked at a larger number of people (300 people, of whom 74 admitted to being habitual knuckle-crackers - a number that sounds closer to my expectations than the previous one) and studied a variety of hand functions. Most were normal; in particular, there was no increased incidence of arthritis. However, the KC group was more prone to swelling of the hand, and also had reduced grip strength.

must be why my grip sucks

I admit to be a habitual knuckle-cracker, i dont even know why i do it. Knuckles, fingers, elbows crack very occasionally, shoulders do it once or twice. A friend of mine has cracked his hands so much he just needs to flex his fingers and they crack.

Cracking is moving the joint into a position it hasnt been in for a while. As you do this the fluid around the joint expands and any gas within the fluid gets expelled which you here as a crack or a pop. Once cracked the joints wont crack again for about 30mins as the fluid has to reabsorb the gas.

It does not cause any harm

When I was younger all my knuckles would crack, now I'm older and a lot bigger they have stopped (or very little). Anyone know the reason for this?
