Letter Of Last Resort
I was watching a program about Whitehall last night (on BB1 or 2), may have been a repeat, not sure. The first job of the Prime Minster is to write personal hand-written letters to the Captains of our four armed submarines on what to do if Britain was attacked and the Prime Minster and second in control were killed - i.e. London is flattened.
I had never thought before on how the nuclear deterrent would work in practice, but I didn't think the next step would be dictated by a Prime Minster who would be dead at the time.
Not sure how accurate this wiki page is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_of_last_resort
but it gives four advised options for Prime Minsters when writing their letter.
My question is, what would you write if you were the Prime Minster? Would you deem it necessary to command a retaliationary attack on the country/group behind the attack? I was thinking about it last night, personally (good luck if I am ever the Prime Minster lol) I would instruct the Captains to seek communication with ally nation, such as France, US, or Australia and hand control over to them if the Captain deems them fit to do so (i.e. they remain a functioning ally). Don't think I could live with myself if I had ordered the mass killing of many innocent people from beyond the grave (doesn't make sense, but you know what I mean!), plus situations are surely very fluid.
Maybe an odd thread, interested in seeing what peoples beliefs are when it comes to this sort of thing!
