Libyan Troops Training Fiasco

The MOD brings them over here to train them and most of them aren't interested. Dozens claim asylum and five of them end up on charges of rape and sexual assault in Cambridge. Who thinks up these ideas?

Indeed. Although my point is who thought that it would be a good idea to bring them to Cambridge to train them? It must have cost a fortune. How do these decision makers not get held to account? I am growing extremely weary of this wasteful extravagance.

Decisions made by f**kwit politicians trying to be heros. Same as when British soldiers need to train locals who are likely to have a leaning towards the enemy. Only a matter of time before the trainng and weapons are used against our troops. You'll never see an armed Afghani when Call Me Dave or Red Ed fly over there for a photo op though.
They can put any idiotic policy in place when they are not in harms way and its our cash they spunk down the drain.

Regarding the cost.... it didn't cost us, they paid... quite a bit as I understand it.

Doesn't make it any less of a stupid idea, there have been issues with their behaviour ever since they arrived.

It is, mate, the attacks where in Cambridge but the barracks are at Bassingbourn IIRC. Couple of blokes were raped and a couple of women were assaulted

Yeah I was listening to that last night on the radio as I drifted off to sleep. I thought I must have been mistaken as nobody would be so idiotic. It would appear that I was wrong.

    I saw that.

I assume if you come from an area of the world were basic human rights are optional then you may need some guidance when going to a country were gang rape is considered a bit rum.

Rape is a shameful thing in Libya, most often for Woman who's been raped as if the issue is public she may have to marry her rapist and could suffer other punishments too.

They are pushing for full on Sharia law in Libya at the minute then it will take 4 Muslim men of good character to witness 'penetration' as evidence of rape and nothing else will do.  The Saudi's know the score!

If the UK military told these guys that we don't operate under these backward, brainwashed 7th century ideals then the far left would scream ISLAMOPHOBIA!!!

Unsupervised soldiers in a foreign country misbehaving and committing crimes? Unheard of!
    Obviously due to religion.

Is it just me or did I see this story make the rounds via the news LAST year. The Mail can and does have a habit of reiterating old news again. I'm not sure why this is one such item.

its a guardian news article dated 4th november 2014...
So no, wrong on both accounts bud

    and to clarify

Two of the Libyan soldiers have been charged with raping a man in Cambridge. Moktar Ali Saad Mahmoud, 33, and Ibrahim Abogutila, 22, are due to appear before Cambridge magistrates court on Tuesday accused of carrying out the attack on Sunday 26 October.
Last week, Libyan cadets Ibrahim Naji el Maarfi, 20, and Mohammed Abdalsalam, 27, appeared before the same court to admit two counts of sexual assault. They are also due to be sentenced on Tuesday.

I know I only saw the repeat this week. But... I'm sure I saw an earlier report. Something along the lines of an issue with discipline. The latest news says they arrived in June so that's as early a timeline. It's also not noted as to when the first offenses occurred. Bugging my nogging...

The local paper (Cambridge News) and The Telegraph both mention the first batches arriving at the end of 2013 rather than, what I will assume is the latest batch, in June of this year. I'm thinking there may have been some reference to drunkenness and such issues later on.

No this is a new story. Although you're right about the mail and their occasional regurgitation of old stories.
