Look strong or be strong?

Just curious as to what the majority of ppl on MT train for primarily, aesthetics or function? I've also included a general fitness option as I know that theres bound to be a few people who train for this purpose.

Yeah I know vague lol, but IMO it's pretty easy to say whether you train for hypertrophy or strength primarily, not what type of training you do (Oly, strongman, bb'ing etc.)

well its basically the same mate.

    train for hypertrophy - bodybuilding
    train for strength- strongman

eta: to some extent training for hypertrophy means training for strength (sort of)

Because bodybuilders train for aesthetics and strongmen train to be stronger?

I agree, but it can be covered by several forms of training, for example...

    Aesthetics
    Bodybuilding

    Strength
    Olympic lifting
    Powerlifting
    Strongman
Sports specific (probably a bad example but training grip for a MA)

I'm only interested in what the primary goal of MT'ers is...bigger muscles or stronger muscles lol.

I must have followed the thread wrong. It seemed to me the implication was that training for strength and hypertrophy is basically the same thing?

well mate, lifting weights in any form takes some strength, those who want to lift really heavy ones train for it.

    change the pole to:

do you consider yourself either A - a bodybuilder or B - a strength athlete

The problem with that though is there are plenty that see themselves in the middle somewhere.
training for hypertrophy involves increasing your strength to some extent

I want both but i don't want to be real big. I do want to add a good amount of muscle and lean down to about 10% BF and stay lean but I would not try to add much more mass afterwards but just strength. i'm obsessed with strength.

I train for all the options given in your poll.

    But...

I voted for strength as that would be my first choice if i could only train for one thing.
