Personally, I would go for the best Golf I could get for that much.

    I've owned a 320D and a Golf 1.9.

The Beemer eclipses the VW in every way imaginable.

Plus VW parts prices are a joke - £200 for a seat airbag was yesterday's good news. GTF.

with the price of diesel being like it is, im not sure there is any real advantage to most diesel cars really.

Diesel are way is same as petrol. so higher MPG is a win, i hate diesels but even i'm looking to change soon...

OP how about the 3.0ltr v6 vectra cdti's? thats the one i'm debating...

    Weight: 94kg - Bench: 150kg - Squats: 180kg - Deadlift: 220kg - Clean & Press: 100kg...

I'd go for the Passat mate they are a cracking motor, there's loads of room and they run forever.

You should be able to pick up an 02/03 Golf TDi 130bhp for under £4k. An engine remap is under £300 which should bring it up to c. 165bhp so you end with with a very economical yet very fast motor.

    I drive a pug 206 1.4 diesel 05 plate.

ok, not nippy at all but:

    £35 a YEAR road tax
    cheap insurance
£45 for a months fuel (one tank does me 520 miles)
