Looking for my first flat/room in Glasgow

I'm (finally!!) moving out of home at the end of the month when my probationary period at work ends and my job is (hopefully) more secure.  Apart from uni halls, this is the first time living independently and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to go about the flat/room hunt?

I wouldn't buddying up with someone look for somewhere together, so long as they are not irresponsible and a sympathetic to the starting out aspiring bodybuilder needs in terms of kitchen and fridge hogging ... haha.

I understand that the South Side and West End are the best areas but with the gym I intend to join (Extreme Gym) being in the West End, knowing areas that are surprising good that way or areas to definitely avoid would be useful.  I won't have a car, so access to trains/subway is important.

I know nothing about Glasgow but Spareroom is an excellent website for finding rooms. I'm a landlord and use it all the time to get tenants.

Make sure wherever you go you get a proper tenancy contract

Extreme Gym is in the East End of Glasgow not West. Spare room or Gumtree are your best bets.

Go to the newsagents on the west side of the south end of Byres rd - the one with all the 'to let' cards in the windows. You will have a good choice there.

You have picked the worst time to look for accommodation like this though - all of the Universities have just started back so the rooms available will be sparse.

@Wes Borland - I knew it was East End as well, don't know why I wrote west!

Cheers guys.  I got an ad up on spareroom and gumtree and keeping my eye on the other ads.  Hopefully something will come up soon.  Commuting from Ayr to Glasgow every morning and night after gym and work can be a bit of a pain.

If anyone hears anyone else looking etc, let me know!

Just ignore that newsagents then, its not as though they have loads of ads for flats to-let in the window

As others have said its not a great time of year to be looking but still worth a shot. Not sure where you work in Glasgow but if you're going to use that gun then it might be worth living in Denistoun a.k.a "East Merchant City" ;-)

Rather than just sticking a 'room wanted' ad on Spareroom, take the initiative and get contacting the places you like the look of. You might get landlords contacting you in response to your Room Wanted ad, but in my experience, these are the places which are struggling to fill their rooms, which tends to mean they're not the best!

Good shout fairhouse. I would stick to west end or merchant city myself.

Cheers fairhouse. Very useful. I though dennistoun was one of the avoid areas?

Nippinh to that newsagents today and sent a ton of enwuiries to ads.

As nice as merchant city is, there's only so far 400pcm + bills will get you.

What about Paisley?  I noticed the flats are cheaper and easy train ride into town.  Are there any nice spots that I won't get stabbed on that is pretty close to Planet Bodybuild?
